The Atlanta Braves’ hopes of making it above .500 on Wednesday night were dashed as they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in game two of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia,. That ended Atlanta’s latest winning streak at three straight games and evened up the series between the teams at 1-1.
The Braves were just an out away from the W when Luke Wiliams launched a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning to nab a walk off victory for the Phillies; it was his first major league home run.
Will Smith was tagged with the loss for Atlanta after giving up that winning homerun. Starting pitcher Tucker Davidson surrendered just four hits, walked one, and struck out four over six scoreless innings. Ranger Suarez picked up the win in relief for Philadelphia.
William Contreras was responsible for the Braves’ lone run of the night with an RBI single off Zack Eflin that brought Freddie Freeman to home plate in the top of the sixth.
The Braves are now three and a half games behind the first-place New York Mets in the National League East,while the Phillies are four games back. The two teams will wrap up their division series in Philadelphia this afternoon at 1:05 pm. That game will be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM and 96.9 FM; air time is 11:50 am.
