The Health Initiative for Men and Women, hosted annually by the 100 Black Men of Rome and Northwest Georgia, is a no-go for this year. It is normally held every August at the Floyd County Health Department.
Erin Hernandez, President/CEO of the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition, which partners with the 100 to present the popular event each year, asserts that in these days of coronavirus, large crowds (such as those typically drawn to the Health Initiative) are not a good idea. She adds that alternatives to a big in-person event are currently in the works.
Efforts are being made to offer vendors’ and providers’ services to the public on an appointment basis, indicates Hernandez.
Health screenings will not happen on any one day or in any one place, states Hernandez. The decision to cancel the in-person event this year was made in cooperation with public health officials.
Hernandez urges the public to stay tuned to the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition’s website at www.nwgacancer.org for updates pertaining to the Health Initiative.
