The Floyd County Commission has called for all county residents to shelter in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 (or coronavirus). An ordinance was unanimously approved by Commissioners at a virtual meeting that was held via Zoom on Tuesday night. It is now in effect and remains in place through April 7th at 11:59 pm.
County residents are ordered to self-isolate in their places of residence, aside from essential activities.
This measure also bans community gatherings of 10 or more; any violations may be punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or an imprisonment of up to 60 days.
There are some differences between this and a similar ordinance approved by the Rome City Commission on Monday night, as each entity is different. For instance, there are no package sales in the county.
Jamie McCord, Floyd County Manager, indicated at a caucus session before the meeting that all county residents must heed the CDC and DPH guidelines now in order to avoid a long-term crisis.
Scotty Hancock, Commission Chairman, encouraged surrounding Northwest Georgia communities to adopt similar ordinances.
