Media release from NWGA Charter Academy Initiative:
On Tuesday, August 20, elected officials and community leaders came together at Georgia Highlands College as the founding group unveiled plans for a transformative public charter school in northwest Georgia, aimed at providing innovative educational opportunities for local families.
With over 80 public charter schools already enriching communities across the state, this new initiative aims to bring similar opportunities to northwest Georgia. Public charter schools are authorized by local school districts or by the State Charter School Commission (SCSC) of Georgia.
A representative from the Georgia Charter Schools Association (GCSA) along with other charter advocates presented information on the status of public charter schools in Georgia, including the manner in which public charter schools can complement local districts by offering additional programs and services. Presenters also stressed the importance of community input.
“Community input is key to development of a successful and sustainable public charter school,” said Judy Taylor, Chair of the NW GA Charter Academy initiative. A series of community forums will offer parents and community leaders an opportunity to provide input.
Community forums will be held in Cave Spring (August 27), Cedartown (August 29) and Rome (September 5). Dates, times and locations can be found on the NW GA Charter Academy website: (www.nwgacharteracademy.org)
Taylor added: “We have excellent public and private schools in the region, including college and career academies that serve high school students. A public charter school will simply offer another option for families.”
The mission of the NW GA Charter Academy is to encourage and inspire students to discover their unique worth and empower them to become life-long learners by providing a secure environment where caring and qualified staff will challenge, motivate, and coach students utilizing an immersive approach that will lead them to reach their full potential in school and in life.
