(Media release from the Georgia Department of Transportation):
In October 2023, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) awarded contracts for 19 Design-Bid-Build projects, which spanned safety initiatives, bridge construction, rehabilitation, and resurfacing. One Design-Build project was also awarded in October.
The largest investment, worth approximately $32 million, is a resurfacing project including 17.6 miles of milling and plant mix resurfacing on Interstate 185/State Route (SR) 411 from north of Hopewell Church Road to north of SR 109 in Harris and Troup Counties. This project, along with seven additional resurfacing projects, represent 48% of the overall funds awarded.
Approximately $47 million of the total awarded projects is for six bridge construction projects. The largest investment of these projects involves the construction of a 0.35-mile bridge and approaches on US 441 Business/SR 29 Business over Fishing Creek in Baldwin County, worth approximately $19.8 million.
Approximately $7 million, or 6% of the total awards, is for a single rehabilitation project. This project includes milling and concrete rehabilitation on 5.9 miles of I-16/SR 404 from east of Walnut Creek Bridge to east of Marion Road in Bibb and Twiggs counties.
Two safety projects received a total allocation of $2.3 million from the awarded funds. The largest safety project will install or upgrade guardrails on SR 1 from Cedar Avenue to East 2nd Avenue and on SR 20 from SR 1 to Chateau Drive in Floyd County. This project and one additional safety project account for 2% of the awarded funds.
In October, a Design-Build project with a value of $49 million was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co./Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering. This project will construct a new interchange at I-20 and CR 249/Old Mill Road in Morgan and Walton counties. The proposed new Old Mill Road interchange highway section will feature four lanes with a raised median, bike lanes and sidewalks. Roundabouts will be constructed at the new I-20 ramp terminals.
