The Atlanta Braves split a doubleheader with the Washington Nationals on Sunday to wrap up a four game National League East set at Nationals Park in Washington DC. The Nationals narrowly won the opener by 3-2. The Braves emerged victorious in the nightcap 8-5; that was their 100th win of the season. Atlanta also took the weekend series by 3-1.
Highlights in game one included a solo home run from Sean Murphy that put the Braves within a run of the Nats in the top of the ninth inning.
Allan Winans ended up taking the loss for Atlanta in that outing after giving up two runs and seven hits, walking two, and striking out six in five innings. Jackson Rutledge was credited with the win and Kyle Finnegan picked up the save for Washington.
Highlights of game two included a two-run homer from Kevin Pillar that put the Braves ahead of the Nats in the fourth. Forrest Wall added a two-run shot during the top of the sixth inning.
Spencer Strider secured the win for Atlanta in game two after giving up four runs and seven hits, walking one, and striking out four through five and two-third innings. Joan Adon took the loss for Washington.
The National League East-champion Braves improved their MLB-best record to 100-56 on the 2023 regular season. They are off tonight and will close out the regular season on their home field this week with three games against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night thru Thursday night and three games against the Washington Nationals over the weekend. First pitch of Tuesday evening’s series opener with the Cubs is scheduled for 7:20 pm at Truist Park.
