The Atlanta Braves wrapped up an 11-game road trip with a loss to the New York Mets 7-6 on Sunday night in the finale of a four-game National League East set in New York. Atlanta won the series by three games to one and went 6-5 during the road trip.
Marcell Ozuna got the Braves on the board with a three-run double in the top of the first inning. The Mets scored a run on an RBI single by Jeff McNeil in the bottom of the third and took the lead with six runs in the fifth to include a grounder by Francisco Lindor, a pair of bases loaded walks by Omar Narvaez and Mark Vientos, a catcher’s interference that allowed Daniel Vogelbach to reach home plate, and a two-run single by Rafael Ortega. Sean Murphy had a solo home run for Atlanta in the seventh. Matt Olson put the Braves within a run of the Mets with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, his MLB-best 43rd home run of the season. However, the Mets hung on to claim the victory in the series finale between division rivals by a final score, again, of 7-6.
Yonny Chirinos was charged with the loss for Atlanta after giving up six runs and seven hits, walking two, and striking out five over just four and two-third innings. Kodai Senga picked up the win and Adam Ottavino got the save for New York.
The NL East-leading Braves still have the best record in MLB, now 75-42 on the 2023 season. They will return to Truist Park tonight to open a nine game homestand with the opener of a three-game set versus the New York Yankees. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:20 pm.
