Media release from Rome, GA City Schools:
Music played, families enjoyed the chance to get some free locally-grown produce and kids got a chance to pet animals and make some crafts on Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market for Families at Rome City Schools Parent Resource Center.
The event is one of several the center has planned for this school year and Family Engagement Coordinator Laura Bucio, who helped head the event, was all smiles as families enjoyed the day.
“It was amazing seeing all the families out here. Seeing everyone come together for the event was amazing. I love being with the community and helping our RCS families,” Bucio said.
Parents were able to visit several information booths and take home a bag full of produce while students received a free cookbook and had the chance to visit the craft station where they could paint and color as well as plant a pumpkin seed and pet several animals in the petting zoo.
The event was another way Rome City Schools is reaching out to the community and working on literacy.
“We gave out produce and tied it into literacy by giving out children’s cookbooks. At the children’s craft area, they planted a pumpkin seed and at the same time they received a book, “From Seed to Pumpkin,” Bucio said.
The center, located at 200 Hardy Avenue SW, has been open for just less than a year and offers classes and events to help parents get engaged with their children’s education.
“Our Parent Resource Center is fairly new. We offer lots of classes for parents. We are trying to get with parents for early literacy. We have classes about every two weeks focusing on literacy, math, and even some social emotional classes,” Bucio said. “We also try to bring in some fun events like this so the community can come out and learn more about the PRC.”
Rome City Schools would also like to thank our partners Amerigroup, Synovus Bank, and Communities in Schools for helping sponsor the event.
