HOSPITALITY HOUSE FOR WOMEN IS GEARING UP FOR THE OCTOBER OBSERVANCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Hospitality House for Women is gearing up for the October observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Next month’s activities will include the “1 in 3 It Could Be Me” Awareness Day set for Thursday, October 3rd. Caroline Groce, Prevention and Outreach Coordinator, says that its purpose is to raise awareness of the fact that one in three women and one in nine men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Here is how to participate – wear purple, a “1 in 3 It Could Be Me” sticker (available at www.givebutter.com/1in3itcouldbeme), and tag Hospitality House in social media posts.

The 17th annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes is scheduled for Friday, October 18th in downtown Rome. Groce says that community members are invited to walk down Broad Street in women’s shoes in order to shed light on the notion that you can never understand a survivor’s situation until you have walked in their shoes.

Walkers are asked to meet at Rotary Plaza and are encouraged to arrive early in order to enjoy pre-walk festivities, such as the announcement of the winner in the Grand Marshal Challenge fundraising competition. Registration is set to begin at 11 am with the walk to begin at 12 pm.

Hospitality House also wants to raise awareness that help is available 24/7 to those impacted by domestic violence. Groce says that if you or someone you know needs help, call (706) 235-4673 (HOPE).

Hospitality House for Women has been supporting domestic violence survivors in Rome/Floyd County for 46 years. For additional information, visit www.hospitalityhouseforwomen.org or search for the organization on social media.
