The Atlanta Braves lost to the Washington Nationals by 5-1 on Wednesday night in the finale of a brief two-game National League East set at Nationals Park in Washington DC. That resulted in a series split.
The Nationals scored two runs during the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles from Dylan Crews and James Wood. They added another run in the fourth on a solo home run from CJ Abrams and another during the fifth when Andres Chaparro reached home plate as Juan Yepez grounded into a double play. Jorge Soler drove in the Braves’ only run of the evening with an RBI double in top of the sixth. Keibert Ruiz had an RBI single for the Nationals in the eighth.
Max Fried was charged with the loss for Atlanta after giving up four runs and 11 hits, walking none, and striking out six over six innings. Jake Irving was credited with the win for Washington.
The Braves are now 79-67 on the 2024 regular season, now nine games back from the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies and one game behind the New York Mets for the last NL Wild Card spot. They are off tonight and will open a four game series at home versus the Los Angeles Dodgers this Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:20 pm at Truist Park. That game will not be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM/96.9 FM due to our coverage of high school football. Tune into WLAQ for the play-by-play story of the rest of the series from the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.
In other news from the Braves, pitcher Reynaldo Lopez has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation following his early departure from Tuesday night’s game.
