Wednesday marked the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America. Thousands were killed as two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City, another plane struck the Pentagon in Washington DC, and another crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
Those who were alive when that tragedy occurred remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. Carla Maton, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia, says that she and her cousin had just celebrated birthdays. She attests that she was impressed with the multitude of volunteers and donors that supported the Red Cross as it provided disaster relief in the wake of the attacks.
The Rome-Floyd Fire Department held its annual 9/11 Commemorative Service on Wednesday morning at the Firefighters Memorial located behind City Hall. It was streamed live on Facebook via the City of Rome, GA – Government page.
