Summer will officially arrive this Thursday, June 20th, but the Summer heat has already arrived. Local physicians and public health officials are warning people to take the proper precautions to stay safe amid sizzling temperatures.
Dr. Gary Voccio, the Health Director for the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest Health District, urges area residents to stay indoors when possible, seek shade from time to time when in the outdoors, and (of course) drink plenty of water. Be sure that pets have plenty of cold water, too.
Dehydration and heat-related illnesses can strike quickly in the heat of the Summer and can have devastating effects on one’s health, adds Dr. Voccio.
Dr. Voccio also implores area residents to refrain from leaving kids, pets, or anyone in a hot car, which can become a death trap in very short amount of time.
High temperatures around Rome will be in the low 90s through the next few days, but will rise right back into the upper 90s just in time for the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
