(Media release from Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home):
Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home is pleased to partner with Andrew Lee of The Primitive Arts LLC to present a series of Primitive Arts workshops on the Chieftains Museum campus. Workshops will cover Flintknapping, Bark Basket making, Atlatl and Darts, and Cordage and Glue. Each of the four workshops will be held on the Chieftains Museum campus and will be from 10AM to 5PM.
The first of the workshops will be Saturday, April 27th from 10AM to 5PM on the Chieftains Museum campus. This workshop will cover Flintknapping. This workshop is usually broken into a morning session and an afternoon session, with six hours of instruction total. Each student will be given a large piece of stone and, using a smooth cobble as a hammerstone, be shown how to remove a “flake” or small piece. Next, they will be given a pressure flaker tool and instructed on how to thin and shape their flakes into a finished arrowhead. Each student will have the opportunity to create several projectile points, and they will take home their finished pieces and the pressure flaker, as well as several additional flakes to complete on their own. Safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection will be provided. No prior knowledge of or experience with flintknapping is necessary.
To view the full schedule of workshops visit the Chieftains Museum website at www.chieftainsmuseum.org/events.
Each workshop is limited to 8 students and will cost $100 per student. All materials are included in the cost to attend. These workshops are suitable for ages 13 and up. Students under eighteen must have an accompanying adult present at all times. Reserve your spot online at www.chieftainsmuseum.org/events.
