Many people around Rome and Floyd County have observed smoke rising in the area over recent days. That is because the Georgia Forestry Commission has been conducting prescribed burns.
Objectives of prescribed burns are to clear hazardous undergrowth, remove old vegetation and make room for new growth, and to reduce the spread of invasive pests, according to Shasta Farrer, Life and Fire Safety Educator for the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department. She adds that these burns can also prevent the spread of wildfires.
