The Atlanta Braves fell to the Chicago Cubs by 6-4 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL. It allowed the Cubs to take the series by two games to one.
Matt Olson had a two-run homer that got Atlanta on the board during the top of the third inning.
Chicago scored a pair of runs in the bottom of that inning on a ground-out by Ian Happ and a walk by (former Brave) Dansby Swanson. Matt Olson had an RBI single that gave the Braves a 3-2 lead during the top of the fifth. But the Cubs notched three runs during the bottom of that inning with an RBI single from Happ, an RBI double by Cody Bellinger, and an RBI single from Jaimer Candelario. The Braves scored a run in the sixth when Ronald Acuna Jr was hit by a pitch. The Cubs got the run back on an RBI double from Swanson in the seventh and won the ballgame, again, by a final score of 6-4.
Charlie Morton was charged with the loss for Atlanta after surrendering five runs and four hits, walking four, and striking out four over four and one-third innings. Justin Steele picked up the win and Adbert Alzolay got the save for Chicago.
The National League East-leading Braves still have the best record in MLB, now 70-39 for the 2023 regular season. They will open a four-game series in Pittsburgh versus the Pirates tonight.
