TOURISM PROVIDES BOOST TO ROME/FLOYD ECONOMY, LOCALS CAN HELP BY ‘BEING A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN HOMETOWN’

Written by Matt Davis on April 12, 2019. Posted in News/Weather

It’s no secret that tourism provides a considerable economic shot in the arm to Rome and Floyd County.  Nic Diaz, the Marketing and Sales Assistant for the Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism, says that the ultimate goal is to get ‘heads in beds’; overnight stays at local hotels and motels alleviate the tax burden on local taxpayers.

The latest report from the US Travel Association shows that tourists spent a total of $158,850,000 in Floyd County during 2017; numbers were unveiled by the local tourism office in early March.  The report also revealed that each household in Floyd County would need to be taxed another $311 annually to replace taxes generated by economic activity related to tourism.

Diaz encourages locals to be ‘tourists in their own hometown’. A full listing of events and attractions around Rome/Floyd County is posted on the Georgia’s Rome website at www.romegeorgia.org.  And while you’re at it, check out the Georgia’s Rome Facebook page to vote for your favorite entry to nab the ’19 People’s Choice Award in the Georgia’s Rome Photo Contest; the photos with the most likes, shares and comments will be the winners!  There will also be awards for Judges’ Choice.  Selected photos will go on exhibition at Farrell’s Frame and Design during National Travel and Tourism Week and will remain on display from May 11th through 25th; a reception for the selected artists will be held on May 11th

Activities on tap for this weekend to which locals (and visitors) may want to avail themselves include the Chieftains Herb and Plant Sale, a benefit for the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home to be held on Saturday and Sunday at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds, and the Rome Braves’ first homestand of 2019 at State Mutual Stadium.
