SHORTER HAWKS RANKED #1 IN LATEST NAIA COACHES POLL; ALSO, TUNE IN FOR BERRY COLLEGE BASKETBALL TONIGHT ON WLAQ

In your local college basketball update, Shorter University’s Hawks have been chosen by coaches across the country as the nation’s number one team!  For the first time in program history, the Shorter men’s basketball team took the number one ranking in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll, for which results were released yesterday evening.  According to a Shorter sports release, the undefeated Hawks garnered nine first place votes and 280 total points to claim the top spot from former number one Oklahoma Baptist, who lost for the first time this season to number 12 Southern Nazarene last week.

Shorter head coach Chad Warner states, “Although it is nice to be recognized as the nation’s number one team, records and rankings should only be a product of talent and work.  We still have a long way to go and by no means are we satisfied with what we have accomplished to this point.  Hopefully we will continue to work hard and play as a team.”

The basketball Hawks are the second team in Shorter history to nab a number one ranking; the Shorter women’s golf team was first voted number one on April 1, 2011.

In other Shorter basketball news, the Lady Hawks beat Brenau University 67-51 in Gainesville last night.  Also, senior point guard Kelly Ellison has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced yesterday.

Shorter’s Lady Hawks and Hawks will host Southern Poly on Thursday night at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre.  The women will play at 6 pm, followed by the men at 8 pm.  The games will be broadcast on  95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

Tune in for Berry College men’s basketball on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com tonight.  The Vikings will be in Demorest, Georgia to take on Piedmont at 7 pm.  The Lady Vikings will get back into action on Saturday as host to Spelman at 2 pm at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus.
