The Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority presented the 2013 Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame Induction Program last night at Berry College.

This year’s inductees include: Hugh Selman and Nick Hyder for Lifetime Achievement, Ray Brown for Amateur Athlete and Lamar Wright for Professional Athlete.

Hugh Selman, who served as a coach at Armuchee High School for 27 years and around the community, celebrated his 84th birthday at last night’s ceremony.  He says the kids with whom he worked over the years were ‘easy to coach’.

Lamar Wright was recognized for his professional baseball career last night.  He attests that it’s good to have gotten to do something he loved.

Ron Kennedy accepted the Hall of Fame plaque on behalf of the late Nick Hyder.  He says that Hyder is missed.

Also at last night’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Trey Turner of Rome High School and Bailey Brock of Darlington School were named the 2013 John Pinson, Jr. Student Athlete Award winners.

Brock talked about the Darlington Lady Tigers basketball team’s current run in the Class A private school state playoffs.  The Lady Tigers will face St. Francis in the Elite Eight round tomorrow night.  St. Francis beat Darlington earlier in the year.

The Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame has been in existence since 1971 as a means of recognizes those who have aided in the advancement of sports in our community.  WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge’s Randy Davis, a 1997 inductee into the Hall, served as Master of Ceremonies for last night’s induction.
