ROME CITY COMMISSION TO HOLD SECOND READING TONIGHT ON AMENDMENT TO DOWNTOWN PARKING ORDINANCE

Written by Matt Davis on June 10, 2019. Posted in News/Weather

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They will hold a caucus session at 5 pm, to be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall (or the City Auditorium) on Broad Street.  Both are open to the public.

An amendment to the downtown parking ordinance will be placed on second reading tonight.  It permits on-street parking for up to three hours per day (as opposed to two) and sets the enforcement time from 8 am to 6 pm (instead of 8 am to 8 pm).

Rome City Commissioner Wendy Davis was not present when the matter was placed on first reading and approved by a 5-2 vote on May 20th.  She says that a switch to paid parking on Broad Street and free parking in the decks located around downtown Rome was first set into motion in the fall.  Implementation awaited the installment of new License Plate Recognition technology in order to enforce the change.

The changes to parking in downtown Rome have been a hot topic, with some in support and others opposed.  Davis anticipates a continued conversation on the subject, and a final vote on the matter is likely this evening.

Rome City Commissioners typically meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month.  Their second gathering for this month will be held one week from tonight as Commissioners intend to attend the 2019 Georgia Municipal Association convention set for June 21-25 in Savannah.

The Floyd County Commission will hold their next regular meeting Tuesday.  Their 6 pm meeting will be preceded by a 4 pm caucus session at the county Administration Building on East 4th Avenue in downtown Rome.
