RILEY HOMERS IN MLB DEBUT AS BRAVES BLANK CARDINALS

Written by Matt Davis on May 16, 2019. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Wednesday night in the middle outing of a three-game set at SunTrust Park, evening the series at a game apiece.

Top prospect Austin Riley homered for the Braves in his major league debut; his solo shot off Michael Wacha came in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Riley was called up to the bigs from Triple A Gwinnett prior to the outing as Ender Inciarte was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sore back.

Rome native Charlie Culberson added a two-run shot off of St. Louis reliever John Gant in the bottom of the eighth; Culberson had stepped up to serve as a defensive substitute for Riley.

Mike Soroka picked up the win for Atlanta after surrendering just three hits over seven scoreless innings; he also walked three and struck out three. Luke Jackson got the save, his fifth of the year. Wacha was charged with two runs, only one earned, in the loss for St. Louis.

The Braves will conclude their series versus the Cardinals tonight at SunTrust Park.  The first pitch is set for 7:20 pm.  Listen to the game over the airwaves of WLAQ AM 1410 and 96.9 FM.  Air time is 6:05 pm.

In a minor league update, the Rome Braves beat the Asheville Tourists 5-1 in an early outing at State Mutual Stadium on Wednesday.  The teams will wrap up their three-game set tonight at 7 pm.
