RED HOT ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP 10TH STRAIGHT WIN IN HOME RUN DERBY OVER KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Written by Matt Davis on April 16, 2013. Posted in Sports

The Atlanta Braves celebrated Jackie Robinson Day and picked up their 10th straight win in Home Run Derby fashion last night with a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Turner Field.

It was an exciting eighth inning that gave the Braves the lead for good in last night’s game, as Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Dan Uggla all homered in that inning.  Heyward’s solo shot got the ‘home run derby’ started. Justin Upton immediately followed that with his eighth home run of the season.  Dan Uggla got in on the action with a solo shot a few batters later.

Juan Francisco contributed to the Braves’ win with a couple of solo home runs earlier in the game.

Braves starting pitcher Kris Medlin gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings pitched.  The good news for him is that he did not get the loss in last night’s game.  The win actually went to Eric O’Flaherty; he pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.  Kelvin Herrera took the loss for Kansas City after giving up all three homers to the Braves in the eighth.

In other game notes, former Atlanta (and Rome) Brave Jeff Francoeur drove in a run for the Royals in last night’s game.  And Braves relief pitcher Luis Avilan had to be assisted off the field in the top of the ninth due to what appeared to be a hamstring injury.  Craig Kimbrel came in to close out the game for Avilan.

The Braves are now 12-1 for the 2013 season and will wrap up their brief two game series with the Royals today at 12:10 pm at Turner Field.  We will not have the game on the AM 1410 WLAQ as we will be airing the Rush Limbaugh Show at that time and are under contractual obligation to not pre-empt Rush.

Following today’s game, the Braves will hit the road for a 10-game trip that will include stops in Pittsburgh, Colorado and Detroit.
