The runway extension at Rome’s Richard B. Russell Regional airport, a 2013 SPLOST project, is expected to provide a considerable economic shot in the arm to the community once completed.

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Houston Astros 8-3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game interleague series at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.  It was the Braves’ fifth straight loss.

Summertime is rapidly approaching and along with it are summer camps!  The Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home is teaming with the Rome Area History Museum and Oak Hill & the Martha Berry Museum once again this year to educate youngsters on local history via the History Explorers Camp.  The camp will be offered from June 14th through 16th and will culminate with a Family Free Day featuring a Cherokee stickball demonstration on Saturday, June 17th at the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home.

ATLANTA BRAVES AT HOUSTON TONIGHT

The Atlanta Braves were off on Monday night and will return to action tonight with the opener of a brief two-game interleague series in Houston, Texas against the Astros.  Bartolo Colon will serve as the starting pitcher for the Braves, while (former Brave) Charlie Morton will head to the mound for the Astros.  First pitch is set for 8:10 pm at Minute Maid Park.  The game will be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410.  Air time for pre-game programming is 6:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.

GEORGIA HIGHLANDS COLLEGE, DARLINGTON SCHOOL TO HOLD GRADUATION CEREMONIES ON SATURDAY

Georgia Highlands College will hold its 2017 commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 13th at 1 pm at The Forum River Center in downtown Rome.  Nearly 700 diplomas will be conferred upon GHC students (with two of them receiving two degrees), according to a release from the college.

The hunt for an escaped convict that started around lunchtime, continued through the day and into the evening finally resulted in his capture late Monday night.

AAA:  GAS PRICES CONTINUE TO DECLINE, MORE DISCOUNTS ARE ON THE WAY

Gas prices are plunging across the United States, and motorists are expected to see another round of discounts this week, according to AAA, The Auto Club Group, which reports that the national average declined four cents during the past week to settle at $2.35 on Sunday.  Earlier this year, prices were as much as 59 cents higher than year-ago levels; the difference is now down to 13 cents.
