SALVATION ARMY OF ROME TO BENEFIT FROM 4TH ANNUAL RUN FOR THE HOMELESS

The Salvation Army of Rome will benefit from the 4th annual Run for the Homeless scheduled for Saturday, May 20th.  It will feature a 5K race, the one-mile Go-Go run and a two-mile family fun walk.  Funds raised from the event will benefit the Salvation Army’s homeless outreach and community feeding programs, according to Corps Officer Jason Smith.  Registration is available online at www.salvationarmyrome.org.

ATLANTA BRAVES IN MIAMI THIS WEEKEND

The Atlanta Braves had an off-day on Thursday and will return to action this weekend with a three-game set in Miami, Florida against the Marlins.  Mike Foltynewicz is on schedule to serve as the starting pitcher for Atlanta in tonight’s series opener, while Jose Urena will head to the mound for Miami.  First pitch is set for 7:10 pm at Marlins Park.  The game will be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410.  Air time for pre-game programming is 5:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.

LOCAL MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVATION TO BE A FIVE-DAY AFFAIR

Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th.  The local observation of Memorial Day will begin two weeks from today with special displays at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds to ‘remember those who gave all’.  The five-day tribute will open to the public on Thursday, May 25th and will remain on display through Memorial Day.  It is being organized by the Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club of Rome.

ATLANTA BRAVES DROP SERIES FINALE AT HOUSTON

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Houston Astros 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a brief two-game interleague set at Minute Maid Park out in Houston, Texas, allowing the Astros to take the series and extending the Braves’ current losing streak to six straight games.

Amanda Carter has been tapped to succeed Ann Arnold as the new director of Rome’s Downtown Development Authority, the office of the City Manager announced on Wednesday.

I-85 EXPECTED TO OPEN AT LEAST BY MORNING RUSH HOUR ON MONDAY

The portion of I-85 that has been closed since March 30th due to a fire and subsequent bridge collapse is slated to re-open at least by morning rush hour on Monday, Governor Nathan Deal announced on Wednesday along with Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry and State Transportation Board Chair Robert L. Brown Jr.

WILSON TO SERVE AS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR ROME CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM

Dr. Brittney Wilson has been tapped to serve as assistant superintendent for the Rome City Schools.  The decision was made on Tuesday night by the Rome Board of Education, who also approved the appointment of Parke Wilkinson, current principal of Anna K. Davie Elementary School, to serve as the principal of Rome Middle School during the next school year.
