FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION WILL MEET TODAY

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners is slated to meet today.  They’ll convene for a caucus session at 4 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6 pm at the county’s Administration Building on East 4th Avenue in downtown Rome.  Both gatherings are open to the public.

ATLANTA BRAVES BACK AT SUNTRUST PARK TONIGHT!

The Atlanta Braves were off on Monday and will return to their home field at SunTrust Park tonight to open a brief two-game interleague series against the  Toronto Blue Jays.  Julio Teheran will be the starting pitcher for Atlanta, and Marcus Stroman will head to the mound for Toronto.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 pm.  The game will be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410; air time from the Braves Radio Network is 6:20 pm.

LOCAL GOLFERS SOUGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL SWING FOR THE KIDS GOLF CLASSIC

Attention, golfers!  You are invited to participate in the 24th annual Swing for the Kids Golf Classic, a benefit for the Rome-Floyd County Commission on Children and Youth, scheduled for Friday, September 7th at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome.  Registration is set for 8 am; the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 am.

FOUR BRAVES TAPPED FOR MLB ALL-STAR GAME

The Atlanta Braves will send four players to this year’s MLB All-Star Game!  It was announced on Sunday that Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis were elected to the National League’s starting line-up.  They’ll be joined by pitcher Mike Foltynewicz.  Ozzie Albies has been named an NL reserve.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT SET FOR JULY 21ST

The Rome-Floyd Recycling Center will host an Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, July 21st.  Items will be accepted at the current center, located in north Rome at 405 Watters Street, from 9 am until 1 pm.  Locals are urged to bring their computers, along with peripheral equipment, and televisions so as to keep them out of the landfill, this according to Michael Skeen, Director of Floyd County Public Works.  Other items that are typically accepted include copy machines, printers, car batteries, recorders and cameras.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling the center at (706) 291-5266 through Friday, July 20th at 5 pm.

AAA:  SUMMER GAS PRICES ARE HIGHEST IN FOUR YEARS

Gas prices in Georgia have increased three cents since last week, according to AAA, The Auto Club Group, which additionally reports that, so far, motorists are finding the most expensive summer gas prices in four years. Gas prices in Georgia have averaged $2.75 per gallon since June 1st, an incline of nearly 60 cents compared to the average price last summer.  However, the current price at the pump remains 12 cents below this year’s high, set during the Memorial Day weekend.

TELLUS MUSEUM DIRECTOR TO SPEAK ON GEORGIA GOLD RUSH TONIGHT IN ROME

Jose Santamaria, Executive Director of the Tellus Science Museum located in Cartersville, will speak in Rome tonight about the Gold Rush in Georgia.  His lecture will be held at 7 pm at the Rome-Floyd County Library, as part of the monthly meeting of the Rome, Georgia Mineral Society, according to a media release from Tellus.

ATLANTA BRAVES END ROAD TRIP WITH LOSS AT MILWAUKEE

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four game set at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI, allowing the Brewers to take the series 3-1.
