A PLETHORA OF EVENTS ON TAP FOR SATURDAY IN GREATER ROME

A plethora of events are scheduled to take place around the Greater Rome area this weekend! Saturday will be a particularly busy day with activities to include the Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower 5K and 2-Mile Health Walk, the Health Initiative for Men and Women, the Rome Celebrity Dance Challenge and the Model and Johnson Schools Foundation, Inc.’s Spaghetti Dinner and Auction.

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Washington Nationals 8-2 in the opener of a four game series at Turner Field on Thursday night, marking the Braves’ fifth straight loss.

CAVE SPRING RAPIST SENTENCED TO 100 YEARS

Lester Owensby Pauley of Cave Spring was sentenced to 100 years in prison without parole on Wednesday by Floyd County Superior Court Judge Walter Matthews.  The sentencing followed the conviction of Pauley on 15 charges, including three counts of rape, earlier this week.  Testimony of Pauley’s sexual abuses were lodged by victims in court.  The incidents occurred between 2008 and 2014, according to this morning’s Rome News-Tribune.  Pauley, now 60 years of age, was arrested in 2014.

ROME LITTLE THEATRE TO KICK OFF 60TH SEASON THIS WEEKEND

The Rome Little Theatre will kick off its 60th season of continuous live theatre with “Forever Plaid”, which opens tonight and will run for the next two weekends at the DeSoto Theatre in downtown Rome.

FALCONS NOW 2-0 IN PRE-SEASON ACTION

The Atlanta Falcons are now 2-0 in NFL pre-season action after defeating the Cleveland Browns 24-13 on Thursday night in Cleveland, Ohio.  The Dirty Birds remain on the road for their next pre-season game on Thursday, August 25th against the Miami Dolphins.

ROME BRAVES SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER AT SMS

The Rome Braves split a double-header with the Hagerstown Suns at State Mutual Stadium on Thursday night.  Hagerstown won the opener 4-2, while Rome took a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.  The Braves will be in Asheville, North Carolina tonight to take on the Tourists at 7:05 pm.

GEORGIA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECLINES IN JULY

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at five percent in July, down from 5.1 percent in June and from 5.7 percent in July 2015.
