PART OF SECOND AVENUE TO CLOSE TODAY

Here’s a heads-up for Rome area motorists – if you normally travel on Second Avenue during your daily commute, you might want to find an alternate route to reach your destination today.  The railroad crossing on Second Avenue at Riverbend Drive is scheduled to be closed from 9 am until 3 pm so that Norfolk Southern can conduct maintenance work at the site.  If necessary, that closure will continue on Wednesday.

AAA:  DECLINE IN OIL PRICES LEADS TO DISCOUNT AT THE GAS PUMP

Gas prices are expected to fall even lower this week due to a drop in the price of oil, according to AAA, The Auto Club Group, which reports that crude oil prices declined $3.60 last week, possibly leading to a decline of about nine cents at the gas pump.

ROME CITY, FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO HOLD FIRST MEETINGS OF 2016 THIS WEEK

The Rome City Commission will hold their first meeting of 2016 this evening.  Two new Commissioners, Craig McDaniel and Sundai Stevenson, will be sworn in during the gathering at City Hall (the City Auditorium) on Broad Street.  Activities will begin with a caucus session at 5 pm in the Sam King Room, to be followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 pm in the commission’s second floor meeting room.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IS TONIGHT, COVERAGE ON WLAQ!

Tonight’s the night of the College Football Playoff National Championship!  No. 2 Alabama will face No. 1 Clemson in this year’s title game, which will take place at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.  Kick off is set for 8:30 pm Eastern.

ALABAMA RACKS UP ANOTHER NATIONAL TITLE!

The Alabama Crimson Tide are once again college football’s National Champions!  The Tide pulled out a 45-40 victory over Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game on Monday night at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.  It marks Alabama’s 16th national title and the fourth in their last seven seasons.  Head coach Nick Saban now has five national titles under his belt, four with Alabama.

THE 2016 SESSION OF THE GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS TODAY!

Today is opening day for the 2016 session of the Georgia General Assembly.  Katie Dempsey of Rome, who represents the 13th district in the state House of Representatives, anticipates that steps will be taken during this legislative session to coordinate mental health services statewide.  Dempsey indicates that early intervention (particularly for children) and helping those with developmental disablities to find gainful employment are among her top priorities under the Gold Dome this year.

BULL RIDING RETURNS TO THE FORUM THIS WEEKEND!

Bull riding will return to The Forum in downtown Rome this weekend!  The Three Rivers Invitational Bull Riding event, presented by Charlie Lowry’s 4L and Diamond S Rodeo Company, will take place tonight and Saturday night.  Doors will open at 6 pm, with bull riding to begin at 8 pm.
