KENTUCKY TO FACE KANSAS IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Of course, the big story in sports today is the NCAA Championship Game.  Kentucky will face Kansas in this year’s men’s championship game at 9 pm tonight.  The game will be televised on CBS.

Tomorrow’s the big night for the 95.7 FM The Ridge/Rome News-Tribune Battle of the Bands!  The Top 5 in the competition have been determined, thanks to an online voting process on the Rome News-Tribune’s website, and will duke it out on stage at the Cedartown Performing Arts Center at 7:30 pm.

ATLANTA HAWKS AT HOME AGAINST THE NEW YORK KNICKS, ON THE ROAD AGAINST PHILADELPHIA 76ERS THIS WEEKEND

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks will play host to the New York Knicks tonight at the Philips Arena.  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.  That will be followed by a match in Philadelphia against the 76ers tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.

SHORTER SOFTBALL SWEEPS FIRST DAY AT SSAC CROSSOVER EVENT IN COLUMBUS

In college softball, Shorter University’s Lady Hawks are in the midst of a Southern States Athletic Conference Crossover event thru tomorrow in Columbus, Georgia.  In action from day one yesterday, the Lady Hawks shut out William Carey 3-0 and took a 13-3 victory from Spring Hill.  Today’s schedule includes matches with Mobile at noon and Faulkner at 4 pm.  Tomorrow, the Lady Hawks will face Belhaven at noon and Auburn-Montgomery at 4 pm.

JOURNALIST COKIE ROBERTS VISITS BERRY COLLEGE

Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts paid a visit to Berry College yesterday.  She delivered a speech, “An Insider’s View of Washington DC”, as part of the college’s Gloria Shatto Lecture Series.  Prior to her lecture, she toured the Berry campus and answered questions from local media during a press conference.  When asked about some of the things an insider might know about DC that the average American wouldn’t, she said that things have changed over the years.  She says that politicians are far less friendly with each other than they used to be.

UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN IN METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the preliminary unemployment rate for metro Rome declined to 10.9 percent in February, down from a revised 11 percent in January.  Metro Rome’s jobless rate stood at 10.8 percent in February 2011.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO WASHINGTON NATIONALS

In your Atlanta Braves Spring Training update, the Braves lost to the Washington Nationals 6-3 yesterday in Viera, Florida.  One highlight of the game for the Braves was when Jason Heyward drilled a home run over the centerfield wall to allow the Braves to get on the board first in the top of the fifth inning.

COLLEGE BASEBALL UPDATE: SHORTER ON THE ROAD, BERRY AT HOME THIS WEEKEND

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks will be in Mt. Vernon, Georgia this weekend for a three game set with Brewton-Parker.  The teams will play a single game this evening at 6 pm and a double header tomorrow at 1 pm.
