SUPER TUESDAY – T-MINUS ONE WEEK!

Super Tuesday is one week from today.  March 6th is the day that Georgia voters (and voters in numerous other states) will go to the polls for the Presidential Preference Primary election in which Republicans will chose their presidential nominee.  In addition, voters in Floyd County will also determine the fate of the 2012 SPLOST.  The proposed SPLOST is a continuation of the current one cent sales tax that would take effect in June 2013 and raise $32.4 million in sales tax revenue.  Voters in the city of Rome will also decide whether or not to allow for Sunday alcohol package sales.  Early voting is now being offered daily from 8 am until 5 pm at the Floyd County Elections Office inside the Floyd County Administration Building on East Fourth Avenue in downtown Rome and at the Rome Civic Center.  It continues thru Friday, March 2nd.

GREATER ROME CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BOARD OF DIRECTORS PLEDGES SUPPORT OF 2012 SPLOST

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors has unanimously pledged its support of the 2012 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), according to a Chamber media release.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY HOLDS GROUNDBREAKING ON NEW RESIDENCE HALL

Shorter University held an official groundbreaking yesterday afternoon for their new student residence hall.  According to a Shorter media release, the 100-bed building will be located behind the Sheffield-Thompson Building between the Newman Hall and Hazel Eubanks Hall residences.  The new residence hall is expected to be completed for use during the fall semester.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL PREPARING FOR SSAC TOURNEY; COVERAGE ON 95.7 FM THE RIDGE

Shorter University’s basketball teams are gearing up for the Southern States Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, which begin tomorrow with opening round play.  Men’s opening round and quarterfinals will be played at the Darlington School while women’s opening round and quarterfinals will be played at the Forum in downtown Rome tomorrow and Thursday.  Friday’s semifinal round and Saturday’s men’s and women’s championship games will all be played at The Forum.  Shorter’s Hawks are the SSAC East’s number one seed and will make their first appearance in this year’s tournament on Thursday at 6 pm at Darlington against the winner of tomorrow’s opening round game between East No. 5 seed Brewton-Parker and West No. 4 seed Mobile. The Lady Hawks are the SSAC East’s number two seed and will open the conference tournament on Thursday at 3 pm at the Forum in downtown Rome against West No. 3 seed Faulkner.

NEWT GINGRICH TO CAMPAIGN IN ROME TODAY

Speaking of election season, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will be campaigning in Rome today.  The GOP hopeful will make a stop at the Tillman Hangar at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport at 3 pm.  Layla Shipman with the Floyd GOP is coordinating Gingrich’s visit to Rome today.  She will be a guest on WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome this morning at 7:50 am.

ROME NOON OPTIMIST CLUB HOLDS STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARDS BANQUET

The Rome Noon Optimist Club held its 9th annual Student of the Year Awards Banquet last night at the Palladium.  The program recognizes the top seniors in the community for their accomplishments during high school.

AREA HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAMS CONTINUE IN STATE PLAYOFF; COVERAGE ON WLAQ AND 95.7 FM THE RIDGE

A handful of area high school basketball teams continue on in the state playoffs.  We’ll have games for you over the next couple of nights on WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge.  WLAQ AM 1410 will have coverage this evening as the Darlington Lady Tigers take on Towns County on the road in a Class A match up.  Tip off is set for 6 pm for the game, which will also be aired online at www.wlaq1410.com.  95.7 FM The Ridge will be at Model tonight as the Lady Blue Devils host Greater Atlanta Christian at 6 pm and at Coosa tomorrow night as the Eagles host Jordan at 6:30 pm.  Those games will also be aired online at www.theridge957.com.

College softball is on tap for Shorter University today as the 9th ranked Lady Hawks  travel to Waleska, Georgia to take on Reinhardt University.  The double header will get underway at 3 pm.
