WHITEFIELD DROPPING OUT OF SENATE RACE

Chad Whitefield has announced that he is dropping out of the race for State Senate. He is giving up his bid for the Senate in order to focus on a new business venture.  His company, Rome-based Advanced Rehabilitation Management Group, has entered into a joint venture opportunity in Florida and Virginia.  He expects a lot of travel with this new venture.

The Atlanta Braves remain winless so far for the 2012 season as they lost to the Houston Astros 8-3 last night in Houston, Texas.

FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET TUESDAY

FLOYD MEDICAL CENTER’S PALLIATIVE CARE PROGRAM RECEIVES LIVESTRONG GRANT

Floyd Medical Center’s Palliative Care program is among four programs in the southeastern United States to receive a $10,000 Livestrong Community Impact Project grant, according to an FMC media release.  Livestrong is the organization founded by cyclist Lance Armstrong to serve people living with cancer and to empower communities to take action against the world’s leading cause of death.

POWERS TO RETURN AS MODEL HIGH’S HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

Gordon Powers will be returning to Model High School as their head football coach this fall.  Powers was Model’s head coach from 2003 to 2008.  He will replace Lynn Hunnicutt, who recently announced his upcoming departure from that position.

NOBLE FAMILY HISTORY TO BE EXPLORED AT CIVIL WAR SYMPOSIUM THIS THURSDAY

The extensive history of the Noble Family and their time in Rome will be the focus of the Civil War Symposium this Thursday, April 12th at 6:30 pm in the Coosa Room of the Rome Floyd County Library.  Local architect Robert Noble will present the history of his family, according to a release from the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Noble is a native Roman and a great great grandson of John Noble.  He is an architect whose offices are located on South Broad directly across the river from where the historical Noble Foundry stood during the Civil War.  The Noble Foundry played a significant role in the war with the production of famed Noble Cannons. The foundry also manufactured “The Yonah”, a player in the Great Locomotive Chase that took place on April 12, 1862.
