NEW FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO TAKE OATH OF OFFICE ON WEDNESDAY

Floyd County Commissioners elect Larry Maxey and Rhonda Wallace will take their official Oath of Office this Wednesday, August 8th at 9 am in the Community Room on the second floor of the Floyd County Administration Building on East 4th Avenue in downtown Rome.  Probate Court Judge Steve R. Burkhalter will administer the Oath, according to a release from the Board of Commissioners.

ROME BRAVES’ SERIES CLOSER WITH KANNAPOLIS INTIMIDATORS RAINED OUT IN NC; HEFFLINGER NAMED SALLY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Rome Braves’ series closer with the Kannapolis Intimidators was halted due to rain in Kannapolis, North Carolina last night.  It will not be made up as the Braves and the Intimidators will not meet again this season.  The Braves currently have a five game lead in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League.  They’ll take today off and will welcome the Greensboro Grasshoppers to Rome for a four game series tomorrow night thru Saturday night.  First pitch of tomorrow night’s game is set for 7 pm at State Mutual Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com. Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.

ATLANTA FALCONS PRE-SEASON RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!

There is no doubt that Atlanta Falcons fans eager for some football will pack the Georgia Dome this Thursday night as the Falcons face the Baltimore Ravens in NFL pre-season action.  Kick off is set for 7:30 pm.  Once the regular season begins, you can catch all the action of Atlanta Falcons football on 95.7 FM The Ridge.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES TO HONOR WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

World Breastfeeding Week is observed every year from August 1st thru 7th in more than 120 countries.  The goal of the observation is to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world, according to a press release from Northwest Georgia Public Health.  

PUBLIC INPUT BEING SOUGHT ON NEW FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT

The Floyd County Board of Education has begun the search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Lynn Plunkett, who will officially be retired as of December first.  A survey has been developed by the Georgia School Boards Association to help the board better understand the wishes of the community as decisions are made during the superintendent search.  The brief survey takes about five minutes to complete.  Feedback is being sought on the community’s ideas about the qualities that are important in a new superintendent.  The survey is available online at www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22FU3UQMT9D.

ATLANTA BRAVES CONTINUE WINNING STREAK OVER PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES WITH MONDAY NIGHT WIN IN PHILLY

The Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 last night in the opener of a three game series in Philly.  Ben Sheets got the win in the Braves’ seventh straight victory over the Phillies.  He went seven and a third innings, allowing just one run and seven hits.

Back-to-school time is here.  Students in the Floyd County School system head back to class this Wednesday, August 8th.  

ROME SHRINE CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL TELETHON

The Rome Shrine Club held their annual telethon over the weekend.  The telethon took place at the Forum in downtown Rome and was televised on Comcast Channel 4.  If you would like to make a donation and were unable to do so during the telethon, you can mail it to the Rome Shrine Club at P.O. Box 1544, Rome, Georgia 30162.  Money will go towards Shriners Hospitals for children.
