ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL CHOW DOWN

Help yourself to some southern comfort food and help abandoned and unwanted animals at the first annual Animal Rescue Foundation Chow Down.  The event is set for this Thursday, May 24th from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Rome Civic Center.  Great ‘southern comfort’ food and all the fixins will be served up.  There will also be music from Broad and Third Band and a silent auction at 6 pm.  Money will go towards the Animal Rescue Foundation (or ARF).  ARF’s Janie Jones says that her organization, which started nearly a year ago, works with local animal agencies towards the well being of dogs and cats.

QUALIFYING BEGINS TODAY

Qualifying begins today at 9 am for federal, state and local offices.  It continues thru Friday at noon.  Qualifying for state and federal races will take place in Atlanta.  Those seeking to qualify for local partisan races must do so with their party.  The Floyd County Republican Party’s headquarters opens today at 337 Broad Street in Rome.  The Floyd County Democratic Party’s headquarters is located at 5 Broad Street.

GOOD DAY AT THE BALL PARK FOR ROME BRAVES

It was a good day at the ball park for the Rome Braves yesterday as they swept an early Education Day double header with the Augusta Greenjackets at State Mutual Stadium.  The teams played a double header yesterday to make up the series opener between the teams that was rained out on Monday night.

SHORTER SOFTBALL A WIN AWAY FROM NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP

Shorter University’s 10th ranked Lady Hawks softball team is headed for the NAIA national championship game!  The Lady Hawks beat 16th ranked Brenau 5-1 yesterday in the semifinal round of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama to advance to the championship game.  They’ll take on Oklahoma City for the NAIA title this afternoon at 1:30 pm.   the national championship game on Wednesday.

BARK IN THE PARK SET FOR THIS SUNDAY AT ROME BRAVES GAME

Another event on the horizon for animal lovers is the Bark in the Park to be hosted by Claws for Paws at the Rome Braves game this Sunday, May 27th. Activities will get underway at 2 pm and will include a 1.3 mile dog walk, contests, a frisbee dog demo and, of course, the Rome Braves game against the Asheville Tourists at State Mutual Stadium, according to Allison Watters with Claws for Paws.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE SET FOR MONDAY IN SHANNON

Memorial Day is coming up on Monday, May 28th.  A special service will be held in the Shannon community that day, for which the guest speaker will be Major General William Terry Nesbitt, former Adjutant General of the Georgia National Guard.  The service will begin at noon near the flagpole at 1 Memorial Drive.

ATLANTA BRAVES DROP SECOND IN A ROW TO CINCINNATI REDS IN CINCY

SECOND ANNUAL ROME CELEBRITY DANCE CHALLENGE SET FOR AUGUST 18TH TO BENEFIT SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTER

Familiar faces will take the stage in the second annual Rome Celebrity Dance Challenge on Saturday, August 18th at 7 pm at the Rome City Auditorium.  All proceeds will benefit the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia.
