HEART OF THE COMMUNITY AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED AT BLACK-TIE AFFAIR TOMORROW NIGHT

The Heart of the Community Awards of Honor will be presented tomorrow night at a black-tie affair at the Forum in downtown Rome.

RFPRA AWARDED HOSTING RIGHTS FOR DISTRICT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS

The Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) has awarded the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority hosting rights for the 2012 Boys and Girls District 5 Basketball Tournaments, which begin Monday.  According to an RFPRA media release, Sports Manager Larry Powell represented the RFPRA in presenting the tournament bid at the District 5 Athletic Committee Session.  An estimated 28 district teams from Northwest Georgia will attend the tournament, which will last approximately one week.  Tournaments will be held for boys age divisions 9-10, 13-14 and girls age division 9-10.  Winning teams at the district level will compete at the state level tournaments in March.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY SWEEPS BERRY COLLEGE IN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S HOOPS

The cross-town rivalry between Berry College and Shorter University was revived again last night, and once again it was Shorter that emerged as the victors in men’s and women’s basketball at Berry’s Cage Center.  The number 22 Lady Hawks beat the Lady Vikings 67-55.  The number one Hawks defeated the Vikings 76-60, marking the Hawks’ 25th victory over the season.  It was also Shorter men’s head coach Chad Warner’s 99th career win.  Shorter’s teams will travel to Mt. Vernon, Georgia to take on Brewton-Parker tomorrow.  The women will play at noon, followed by the men at 2 pm.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Berry’s teams will also be on the road tomorrow; they’ll travel to Young Harris College.  Tip off is set for 2 pm for the women and 4 pm for the men.  Coverage of those games will be provided on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com.

ATLANTA HAWKS IN PORTLAND TO TAKE ON TRAILBLAZERS TOMORROW NIGHT

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks continue a five-game road trip with a stop in Portland, Oregon to take on the Trailblazers tomorrow night at 10 pm.  The Hawks currently possess a 19 wins – 12 losses record overall for the 2011-2012 season with ten wins and five losses on the road.

GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNS LEGISLATION TO ALLOW MILITARY-TRAINED NURSES TO PRACTICE IN GEORGIA

Governor Nathan Deal yesterday signed legislation to amend a state law that inadvertently excluded some military-trained nurses from a license to practice in Georgia.  According to a release from the Governor’s office, HB 675 revises the definition of “approved nursing education programs” for registered professional nurses and licensed practical nurses.  Through the passage and signing of the bill, about 150 nursing professionals will now be eligible for employment in Georgia.  The bill passed the Georgia General Assembly unanimously.
