LOCAL COLLEGE BASEBALL WEEKEND SCHEDULE

College baseball is on tap this weekend for local teams.  Shorter University will host the University of Mobile in a three game series at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  The teams will play a double header tomorrow at noon, which will be followed by a solo game on Sunday at 1 pm.  Berry College’s Vikings will be on the road to take on Birmingham-Southern.  The teams will play a double header tomorrow at 2:30 pm, followed by a single game on Sunday at 2 pm.

UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN IN GEORGIA TO LOWEST RATE SINCE MARCH 2009

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler has announced that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February has declined for the seventh consecutive month to 9.1 percent, the lowest rate since March of 2009, when it was also 9.1 percent.  That number is down from a revised 9.2 percent in January.  Georgia’s jobless rate stood at 9.9 percent in February 2011.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO HOLD SEVERE WEATHER STORM SPOTTER CLASS AT GSD

The National Weather Service will hold a Severe Weather Storm Spotter Class at the Georgia School for the Deaf at 232 Perry Farm Road in Cave Spring on Thursday, March 29th at 6 pm.  According to a release from the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency, the class is expected to last about two hours and will cover the elements that make up severe weather, severe weather safety, and offers certification as a National Weather Service Severe Weather Spotter.  The class is free and open to the public and will be held in the school’s auditorium.  GSD will provide translators for the deaf and hearing impaired.

ATLANTA HAWKS TAKE EXCITING OT WIN OVER CLEVELAND CAVALIERS AT PHILIPS ARENA

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks picked up an exciting, down-to-the-last second (overtime!) win over the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-102 at the Philips Arena last night.  The Hawks’ Joe Johnson sent the game into overtime with a three point shot in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.  The game was neck and neck during that OT, and the Hawks ended up winning it with 18 seconds left in the game, again, by a score of 103-102.  The Hawks will welcome the New Jersey Nets to Atlanta tomorrow night for a 7:30 pm tip off.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL WEEKEND SCHEDULE

College softball will also be going on this weekend.  Shorter University’s Lady Hawks will host Brewton-Parker in a double header today at 5 pm, which will be followed by a double header with Truett McConnell tomorrow at 1 pm at the Alto Park Softball Complex.  Berry College’s Lady Vikings will host Centre in a double header tomorrow at 1 pm at Berry’s South Ford Field.

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR “BATTLE OF THE BANDS”

Tickets are now on sale for the 3rd annual 95.7 FM The Ridge/Rome News-Tribune Battle of the Bands.  The top five finalists in the online voting portion of the competition will perform on Saturday, March 31st at the Cedartown Performing Arts Center.  Brothers and Sisters has already won the People’s Choice Award with the most online votes of 949.  They will go on to perform as the opening act for one of the Cedartown Performing Arts Center’s Legends in Concert Series events, in addition to getting an evening recording session with Shane West of Stephens Music Company.  The same prize will be bestowed upon the winner of the Judges Choice Award, to be determined at the March 31st show.  Other top five finalists in the Battle of the Bands are Clint Sansing with 740 votes, Nosecone Prophets with 578 votes, Shawn Aris with 518 votes and Five 40 with 507 votes.

SHORTER’S HILL, BANKS AND ELLISON NAB NAIA BASKETBALL HONORS

The 2011-2012 season has drawn to a close for the Shorter University men’s and women’s basketball teams and has resulted in All-America accolades for a couple of Hawks and a Lady Hawk.  Walter Hill and Anthony Banks have been named to the 2011-2012 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-America Teams, the NAIA announced yesterday.  According to a Shorter sports release, Hill picked up a first team nod while Banks got honorable mention.  In addition, Kelly Ellison has been named a third team All-American, as revealed by the NAIA’s release of its annual Division I Women’s Basketball All-America Teams.  She is Shorter’s first-ever three-time women’s basketball All-American.

ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP 10 INNING WIN OVER WASHINGTON NATIONALS IN SPRING TRAINING

In Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves picked up a 3-2 win in 10 innings over the Washington Nationals in Spring Training action yesterday in Viera, Florida.   The Braves will host the Miami Marlins this afternoon at 1:05 pm at Champion Stadium at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista.
