INTERNET SAFETY TO BE HIGHLIGHTED AT TEEN FORUM

The internet can be a dangerous place, particularly for youngsters.  The Hospitality House for Women seeks to educate middle and high schoolers on internet safety with Lose the Drama!  Safe Dating and Social Media Forum tomorrow from 10 am until 2 pm in the Lakeview Auditorium on Georgia Highlands College’s main campus.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO BALTIMORE ORIOLES IN SPRING TRAINING

The Atlanta Braves lost to the Baltimore Orioles yesterday in Spring Training action in Sarasota, Florida.  The Braves will split up today for matches with both of New York’s teams.  One squad will take on the Mets in Lake Buena Vista; the other will face the Yankees in Tampa.  Both games are set to begin at 1:05 pm.

Shorter University’s softball team will be in Gulf Shores, Alabama over the weekend for the Gulf Coast Invitational.  Today’s opponents will include Thomas at 11 am and Madonna at 1 pm.  Tomorrow, they’ll face Central Methodist at 4 pm and Bryan at 6 pm.  The Lady Hawks will conclude their time at the Invitational with an opponent to be announced on Sunday.

FEBRUARY REVENUES UP IN GEORGIA

Governor Nathan Deal has announced that the state’s net tax collections for February 2012 totaled $765 million, an increase of nearly $50 million or 7 percent compared to February 2011.  With eight months Fiscal Year 2012 now behind us, net revenue collections totaled almost $10.6 billion year-to-date, an increase of $471 million or 4.7 percent compared to the same period last year, according to a release from the Governor’s office.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY’S MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAMS READIES FOR NAIA TOURNEY

Shorter University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are getting ready for the 2012 NAIA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.  Both will be held next Wednesday, March 14th thru Tuesday, March 20th.  The men will play in Kansas City, Missouri; the women will play in Frankfort, Kentucky for the first time after more than 20 years in Jackson, Tennessee.

In college baseball, Berry College’s Vikings took a 13-5 home victory from Maryville at Berry’s William R. Bowdoin Field yesterday.  The Vikings will Berry will be on the road to take on Oglethorpe tonight at 6 pm.  The Vikes will host Oglethorpe tomorrow at 2 pm.

CANDIDATES STEP FORWARD FOR ROME CITY COMMISSION WARD TWO POST

A number of people have stepped forward as candidates for the Rome City Commission post vacated by Duane Reid.  Six people have applied for the job, including Mike Page, Piero Barba, Pete McDonald, Steven McDowell, Robert Kane and George Anderson.  Those interested in filling the Ward 2 post have until April 5th to apply.
