RELAY FOR LIFE AT RIDGE FERRY PARK TONIGHT

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is set for this evening at Ridge Ferry Park.  The walk will begin at 6 pm and continue thru 6 am tomorrow morning.  Cancer survivors are urged to participate and are asked to arrive at 4 pm today.  For more information, go to www.floydrelayforlife.org.

ROME BRAVES FALL TO CHARLESTON RIVERDOGS IN 2012 HOME OPENER

It was a night of highlights for the Rome Braves as they played their 2012 home opener last night at State Mutual Stadium.  Unfortunately, it did not result in a win for the Braves as they fell to the Charleston Riverdogs 9-3.  Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson, who was in town on a rehab assignment, was tagged with the loss for Rome.

ATLANTA BRAVES TO PLAY 2012 HOME OPENER AT ‘THE TED’ AGAINST MILWAUKEE BREWERS TONIGHT

The Atlanta Braves will play their 2012 home opener tonight at Turner Field against the Milwaukee Brewers.  First pitch is set for 7:35 pm at “The Ted” in Atlanta.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball. Air time for the pre-game show is 6:20 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

BASEBALL HISTORY RUNS DEEP IN ROME

The return of baseball season, no doubt, has people reflecting on memories of baseball past.  Rome, Georgia has a rich history where baseball is concerned, a history which includes the old textile league leading all the way up to the establishment of the Rome Braves in 2003.  Local historian Ken Studard, owner of Dogwood Books and Antiques in downtown Rome, says that the textile league produced four major league players, including Rudy York, Joe Tipton, Leon Culberson and “The Yankee Killer” Willard Nixon.

NOW THAT SANTORUM’S OUT, TEA PARTIERS CONSIDER BACKING ROMNEY

In the world of politics – the news came earlier this week that Rick Santorum has suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.  Mike Morton with the Rome TEA Party was a supporter of Rick Santorum.  He says that Santorum ran a good campaign, but now it is time to get behind the apparent front runner in the race for the Republican nomination for President, Mitt Romney.

ROCKET WHEELER ‘AT HOME’ WITH THE BRAVES

The Rome Braves first-ever field manager Rocket Wheeler was back at State Mutual Stadium last night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Rome Braves’ home opener against the Charleston Riverdogs.  Wheeler coached the Rome Braves from 2003 thru 2005 and lead the inaugural season team to the 2003 South Atlantic League Championship.  The inaugural season for the Rome Braves was also Wheeler’s first year with the Atlanta Braves organization after more than 25 years with the Toronto Blue Jays organization.  He says he feels like he’s got a home with the Braves now.

CHILLY START TO THURSDAY MORNING

Rome residents, like many across the north and central regions of the state, are waking up to a chilly morning.  The frost advisory issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 10 am.  Areas of frost are forecasted until 9 am, according to the NWS.  Otherwise, today will be sunny with a high in the mid to upper 60s. Highs will be back in the 70s and climbing into the 80s as we head into the weekend.

STEEPLECHASE SET FOR THIS SATURDAY

The 47th annual Atlanta Steeplechase returns to the Kingston Downs this Saturday, April 14th.  The Kingston Downs is located off US 411 East of Rome, where folks will be piling in for a day of horse racing.  Gates open at 9 am.  For more information, visit www.atlantasteeplechase.org.
