SHORTER BASEBALL HAWKS LOSE ON THE ROAD TO TENNESSEE WESLEYAN

Shorter University’s baseball team lost to Tennessee Wesleyan 8-5 yesterday in a non-conference game in Athens, Tennessee.   The Hawks will return to action this Saturday at home against Albany State.  The double header will get underway at noon at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Field.  Saturday will be highlighted by Shorter’s 4th annual Striking Out Breast Cancer event.  That will be followed by a single game between the teams at 1 pm on Sunday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL MOVES INTO THE POST SEASON

High school basketball moves into the post-season for local teams.  In region 7-AA play-in games from yesterday, Pepperell beat Adairsville in boys action 41-38 and Adairsville beat Coosa 44-31 in a girls’ match.

CHATTOOGA COUNTY ACQUIRES HOWARD FINSTER’S PARADISE GARDEN

In news from Summerville, the Paradise Garden Foundation has announced that Chattooga County has purchased the art site of Howard Finster, Paradise Garden, according to a release from the Paradise Garden Foundation.  The site has attained international pop icon status since its creation.  It has been the subject of numerous documentaries and articles and has been listed as a top destination by many travel publications.  Images of Paradise Garden can been seen as cover art and is included in music videos from groups such as REM, Black Hawk and the Talking Heads.  The landscape cultivated by Finster also included the work of other artists, such as Pop Art icon Keith Haring.  Paradise Garden was also featured on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
The purchase of Paradise Gardens by Chattooga County was made possible through donations from local citizens, Finster collectors and a grant from The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), a federal commission that assists Appalachian communities with economic development.  

SHORTER BASEBALL HAWKS TAKE HOME VICTORY OVER BRYAN

 In your local college baseball update (just in case you missed it on 95.7 FM The Ridge), Shorter University’s Hawks beat Bryan College 3-0 in seven innings yesterday at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Field.  The win improves the Hawks’ record to 4-2 for this young 2012 season.  The Hawks will be in Athens, Tennessee today to take on Tennessee Wesleyan in a single game at 1 pm.

ATLANTA HAWKS PICK UP HOME VICTORY FROM INDIANA PACERS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks got back to their winning ways at home with a 97-87 victory over the Indiana Pacers last night at the Philips Arena.  Thus ends a four game home stand to start off the month of February that left the Hawks with one win and three losses.  They now hold a 9-4 record at home and a 17-10 record overall for the 2011-2012 season.   It’s “on the road again” for the Hawks as they travel to Orlando to take on the Magic tomorrow night at 7 pm.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK CONTINUES WITH TORNADO SAFETY TODAY

Severe Weather Awareness Week continues.  Today’s focus is Tornado Safety.  The statewide tornado drill is being held this morning, with Friday as the alternate day.  

HAIKAL IS GNTC’S 2012 GOAL WINNER, VAUGHAN NABS HONORS AS RICK PERKINS INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR

Roger Haikal has been selected as Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s 2012 GOAL winner and Sharon Vaughan has been named the 2012 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year.  The honors were bestowed upon the pair during the Seven Hills Rotary Club meeting at the Coosa Country Club yesterday.  The awards were sponsored and presented by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Seven Hills Rotary Club of Rome and the GNTC Student Leadership Council, according to a GNTC release.

Tune in for Berry College men’s basketball tonight on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com.  We’ll have all the action as the Vikings travel to Maryville, Tennessee to take on Maryville College at 7:30 pm.  Coverage will also be provided this Saturday as the Vikings and Lady Vikings host LaGrange at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus.  Tip off is set for 2 pm for the women and 4 pm for the men.
