DARLINGTON TOPS TRION IN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

WLAQ AM 1410 was proud to be on the campus of Darlington School yesterday to broadcast high school baseball.  Darlington’s number two ranked Tigers beat Trion 9-5 in that game.  Plans are to broadcast more high school baseball on WLAQ; stay tuned for details.

Are you making travel plans for Spring Break or maybe for your summer vacation?  Consider a trip to one of Georgia’s State Parks.  Kim Hatcher, public affairs coordinator for Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, says state parks have a number of special offerings lined up for visitors, including one at Sloppy Floyd Park in Summerville.  Sloppy Floyd Park is one of seven sites offering a first-time camper deal, which gets you two nights at the campground, various equipment to borrow and set up assistance from a park ranger for just $45.  Those who take advantage of this deal will get coupons to go back to the park when you return your equipment.

CRAIG CHARGED WITH FELONY MURDER

The Floyd County man who accidentally shot and killed his son on Monday evening has been charged with felony murder because he is a convicted felon.  Johnny Wayne Craig, age 47 and of 268 Blacks Bluff Road, faces such charges as he was convicted of burglary in 1990.  Craig has also been charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  He says he unintentionally shot and killed his 22-year-old son, Steven L. Craig in an incident behind their Blacks Bluff Road home.  Steven Craig was pronounced dead just before 7:30 pm Monday night.  An investigation into the incident continues.

ATLANTA BRAVES CURRENT STARS TOP ‘FUTURE STARS’ AT COOLRAY FIELD

Atlanta Braves stars of today and ‘future’ stars participated in a Futures game last night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, home of the Triple A Gwinnett Braves.  Retired Braves manager Bobby Cox returned to managing last night as he headed up a team of the Braves’ “Future Stars” which included players moving up through the Braves farm system.  They got beat by the Braves’ current stars, managed by current Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, by a score of 4-3 in a game that was shortened to six and a half innings due to rain.

FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT DR. LYNN PLUNKETT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS

Floyd County Schools Superintendent Dr. Lynn Plunkett has announced plans to retire in December.  She made the announcement at the April meeting of the Floyd County Board of Education yesterday.  According to a Floyd County Schools media release, Dr. Plunkett addressed the Board.  She stated, “After much prayerful consideration and many hours of discussions with my family, I have decided to retire from my position as Superintendent of the Floyd County School System, effective December 1, 2012, in order to spend more time with my family.  I truly love my job and this school system and have enjoyed my 11 years here, especially the last four and a half years as superintendent.  It has been an honor and privilege for me to serve my home town community which helped shape so much of my life.”

ACTOR KEVIN BACON FILMS PILOT AT BERRY COLLEGE

Actor Kevin Bacon was in Rome yesterday.  He was on the campus of Berry College for the filming of a untitled TV pilot.  Bacon has already spent some time in Northwest Georgia; he was in Cedartown last June for the filming of the Billy Bob Thornton movie Jayne Mansfield’s Car.

OPENING DAY IS TOMORROW FOR ATLANTA AND ROME BRAVES!!!

Opening day is tomorrow for both the Atlanta Braves and the Rome Braves!  The Atlanta Braves will open the 2012 season in New York against the Mets.  First pitch is set for 1:10 pm at Citi Field.  We’ll have all the action of the game for you on WLAQ AM 1410!   Pre-game programming will begin at 11:55 am.  (A note to Rush Limbaugh listeners:  we normally do not pre-empt Rush’s program, but will make the exception for Braves’ opening day).

ROME BRAVES RADIO VOICE JB SMITH READY FOR 2012 SEASON

One person that is most definitely ready for baseball season to begin is Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith.  Smith, who is in his fourth season as the voice of the Braves on 95.7 FM The Ridge, gets to know the players on a fairly more personal level than most as he spends five months out of the year with them, every day.
