Excitement is building over the arrival of football season.  Once again this year, Wes Durham will be pulling double duty as the voice of the Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  Durham was a guest on Sports Talk Saturday with Matt D and Scott this past Saturday and said he expects good things from the Atlanta Falcons this year.

STATE SUPERINTENDENT DR. JOHN BARGE TO VISIT PEPPERELL MIDDLE SCHOOL TO PRESENT PHILLIPS AWARD TO FAMILY OF BONNIE COOK

State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge will pay a visit to Pepperell Middle School on Wednesday, August 29th at 9 am to present the Phillips Award to the family of Bonnie Cook.  Mrs. Cook, who served as the school’s secretary for 22 years, passed away on August 25, 2011 in a tragic van fire on her way to a treatment at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center in Rome.  According to a Floyd County Schools media release, this is the second Phillips Award to be presented.  It was created to recognize school staff members who have had a tremendous impact on the education and lives of others.

ATLANTA BRAVES DROP SERIES OPENER TO SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS IN SAN FRAN

The Atlanta Braves lost to the San Francisco Giants 5-2 in the opener of a four game series in San Fran last night.  Braves starter Tommy Hanson took the loss; he gave up five runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.  
The Braves avoided being shut out by the Giants with a two-run double from Freddie Freeman in the top of the ninth.

ROME NATIVE CURTIS REED IS MAKIN’ MUSIC!

Rome native Curtis Reed is releasing an album entitled “Take Me Back to Georgia”.  The songs, including the title track, have various musical influences, Reed told WLAQ’s Good Morning Rome with Elizabeth Davis on Thursday.  He also said that the album will be available for purchase at the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau.

SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTER OF NORTHWEST GEORGIA ADDS NEW BOARD MEMBERS

The Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia has announced the addition of Detective Lee Carter of the Berry College Police Department and Dr. Renva Watterson, interim president of Georgia Highlands College, to its Board of Directors.  

ROME BRAVES’ SERIES OPENER IN SAVANNAH AGAINST SAND GNATS RAINED OUT

The Rome Braves’ series opener with the Savannah Sand Gnats scheduled for last night in Savannah has been postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as part of a double header consisting of two seven inning games tomorrow night at 5:05 pm.  

FORMER BERRY PITCHER MCHUGH SHINES IN MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT WITH NEW YORK METS

Former Berry College baseball player Collin McHugh made his  Major League debut  yesterday with the New York Mets.  Though the Mets lost 1-0 to the Colorado Rockies, McHugh shined as he pitched seven scoreless innings at Citi Field in New York.  McHugh, who pitched for the Vikings from 2006-2008, is the first former Berry College player to make it to the big leagues.
