CHILLY START TO THE WORK WEEK, YET TEMPS EXPECTED TO RISE AS WEEK PROGRESSES

Romans are waking up to a chilly start to the work week.  Overnight lows dipped into the upper 40s to low 50s.  Today’s high is only supposed to reach the low 60s, according to the National Weather Service.  The forecast also calls for mostly cloudy skies with a 40 percent chance of showers, primarily before 5 pm.  Tonight’s low is predicted to fall into the low 40s with partly cloudy skies and a 10 percent chance of showers before 8 pm.

What’s it like to come thisclose to reaching your dream, lose it and then be given a second shot?  Former Darlington football standout Shawn Powell knows first hand.  He signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Buffalo Bills back in April, only to be released when the team trimmed its roster to 53 players on August 31st.  He’s back with the Bills after recently signing a new contract as the team’s punter to replace veteran Brian Moorman.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The Hospitality House for Women provides assistance locally to victims of domestic violence.  It’s Executive Director, Amy Weaver, is happy to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  She feels that it’s important to draw attention to the issue of domestic abuse in order to take measures to end it.

ATLANTA FALCONS MAKE IT 5-0 WITH SUNDAY WIN OVER WASHINGTON REDSKINS IN DC

The Atlanta Falcons managed to salvage what was an otherwise pretty disappointing weekend for most Georgia sports fans, and the ‘Dirty Birds’ remain undefeated on the 2012 season with a 24-17 win over the Washington Redskins in DC yesterday afternoon.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPDATE: WEEK SIX

In your local college football update, Shorter University ended a two-game losing streak with a 35-13 non-conference win over Point University on Saturday at Barron Stadium.  The Hawks now have an even three wins and three losses for the 2012 season and will host Ave Maria this coming Saturday at 1:30 pm.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

The United Way of Rome and Floyd County is on a mission – to raise $1,000,001.  Their 2012-2013 campaign kicked off a few weeks ago.  Dr. Craig McDaniel, president of Georgia Northwestern Technical College, is serving as this year’s campaign chair.
