ATLANTA BRAVES BACK IN ACTION IN NEW YORK FOR WEEKEND ROMP WITH THE METS

The Atlanta Braves were off last night and return to action with a three game series in New York against the Mets over the weekend.  First pitch of tonight’s game one is set for 7:10 pm at Citi Field.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 5:55 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

CHIEFTAINS M– USEUM/MAJOR RIDGE HOME TO HOST ANNUAL LOW COUNTRY BOIL AND BARBECUE THIS MONTH

The Bayou will come to the Rome Civic Center on Thursday, August 23rd as the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home hosts their annual Low Country Boil and Barbecue.  Doors will open at 6:30 pm with dinner to be served at 7:15 pm.  A live auction will begin at 8 pm.  A silent auction will also be held.  Chieftains President of the Board Ruth Demeter says some excellent items will be on the auction block.  Those include posters of Amelia Earhart and John Towers donated by the Smithsonian Museum, a flying lesson with Earl Tillman, a week stay at a Napa Valley resort, and more. 

ROME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NAMED AP SCHOLARS

Rome High School has announced that 42 students have been named AP Scholars by the College Board for their performance on Advanced Placement tests for 2012.  Rome had 28 students named AP Scholar (having passed three tests).  Ten were named AP Scholar with Honors (for passing four AP tests), and four were named AP Scholar with Distinction (for passing five AP tests).

ROME BRAVES FALL TO GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS FOR SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW AT STATE MUTUAL STADIUM

The Rome Braves lost to the Greensboro Grasshoppers for the second night in a row last night by a score of 9-8 in game two of a four game series at State Mutual Stadium.

ATLANTA FALCONS FALL TO BALTIMORE RAVENS IN NFL PRE-SEASON OPENER AT GEORGIA DOME

The NFL pre-season kicked off on sort of a down note for the Atlanta Falcons last night as the Falcons lost to the Baltimore Ravens 31-17 at the Georgia Dome.  Pre-season action continues for the Falcons as they host the Cincinnati Bengals next Thursday night at the Dome.

GEORGIA’S TAX FREE WEEKEND SET FOR AUGUST 10TH AND 11TH

Georgians will get to shop tax free this weekend with a Sales Tax Holiday set for August 10th and 11th.  Items to be exempt from sales tax include clothing (including footwear) with a sales price of $100 or less per item.  The exemption excludes clothing accessories such as jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches and watchbands.  Also exempt are computers.  This includes single purchases, with a sale price of $1,000 or less, of personal computers and personal computer-related accessories.  The exemption excludes cellular devices, furniture and computer-related accessories designed for recreational use.  And for all the parents with kids heading back to school, there’s good news for you – school supplies will be exempt from sales tax during Georgia’s Sales Tax Holiday.  That includes general school supplies to be used in the classroom or in classroom-related activities with a sales price of $20 or less per item.
