PLETHORA OF ACTIVITIES ON TAP FOR SATURDAY IN ROME

It will be a busy weekend in Rome, Georgia this coming weekend.   Saturday holds a plethora of events in store for Romans.  The second annual Rome Celebrity Dance Challenge will be held at 7 pm at the Rome City Auditorium.  Funds raised will benefit the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia.  The Coosa River Basin Initiative’s annual River Revelry:  A Biodiversity Bash will take place that evening from 6 pm until 11 pm at Heritage Park.  Cancer Navigators will hold a kayak/canoe paddle fundraiser that will begin at Grizzard Park at 3:30 pm and will end at Heritage Park in time for the CRBI’s River Revelry.  Also going on Saturday, the Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower Road Race to raise money for the Exchange Club Family Resource Center.  The race will begin at 8 am on Second Avenue in front of Barron Stadium and will end on top of the levee.  The 11th annual Health Initiative for Men (sponsored by 100 Black Men of Rome) will also be held on Saturday from 8 am until noon at the Floyd County Health Department at 16 East 12th Street in Rome.

SUMMER OLYMPICS DRAW TO A CLOSE IN LONDON

The 2012 Summer Olympics came to a close last night in London, England.  The United States won a total of 104 medals, more than any other country.  Some 46 of them were gold (also more than any other country).  Highlights of the final day of the Olympics included a 107-100 victory for USA over Spain in basketball.

FLOYD GOP READY TO RALLY ON SATURDAY AT RUSSELL AIRPORT

The Floyd GOP will host their annual Rally tomorrow at the Tillman Hangar at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field.  The event is set to get underway at 11 am with a barbecue lunch.  The cost is $10 per person or $25 for a family of four.

NET TAX COLLECTIONS UP IN GEORGIA FOR JULY

Governor Nathan Deal has announced that Georgia’s net tax collections for the month of July totaled $1.32 billion for an increase of $91 million, or 7.4 percent, compared to July 2011.  For the month-ended July 31, gross tax revenue deposits totaled $1.8 billion – an increase of $53.5 million, or 3.1 percent, compared to July the previous year.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO NEW YORK METS IN SERIES CLOSER IN THE BIG APPLE

UNITY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JOE CURTISS READY TO MAKE MORE MEMORIES THIS SEASON

High school football season is right around the corner.  Unity Christian School’s Lions are undoubtedly looking forward to the 2012 season.  The 2011 season, for sure, was memorable for the Lions.  It took them four overtimes to do it, but they won the ICSGA Championship.  They had to forfeit the championship after it was realized that there were ineligible players on the team.  Regardless of that, the Lions had an amazing season.  Head Coach Joe Curtiss told Matt D and Scott on WLAQ’s Sports Talk Saturday this past Saturday that the team has made considerable progress in their short history.

ROME INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL IS JUST WEEKS AWAY!

The ninth annual Rome International Film Festival is just around the corner.  The festival opens on the evening of Thursday, September 6th and, as always, will feature films from all over the world.  It will continue all day and into the evening on Friday and Saturday, September 7th and 8th.  New Executive Director Ryan Simmons says that films will be shown at the Historic DeSoto Theatre and the Rome Area History Museum.  He expects it to be a big draw for Rome’s downtown area.

SHOPPERS GET TO SHOP TAX-FREE DURING GEORGIA’S SALES TAX HOLIDAY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS

Today marks the first day of Georgia’s Sales Tax Holiday.  It began at 12:01 am and continues thru midnight tomorrow night.  Shoppers get to shop tax-free on select items just in time for back to school.  For a list of items that will be exempt from sales taxes during Georgia’s Sales Tax holiday, visit the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website at www.etax.dor.ga.gov.
