HARRIS ARTS CENTER TO BE FILLED WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC THIS SPRING

Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Famer Wayne Minshew isn’t just a fan of sports, he’s also a supporter of the arts.  He is looking forward to a flurry of activity this spring at the Harris Arts Center in Calhoun, which will kick off on Saturday, April 14th with the opening of New Harmonies:  Celebrating American Roots Music, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition on the early traditions of American music which will tour the state thru November 26, 2013.  Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal will be among those in attendance for the grand opening of the exhibit, which will be making its first stop in Calhoun.  Minshew says he’s looking forward to it.  He says that the exhibit will be among many musical offerings to be held over a six week period at the Harris Arts Center.

ATLANTA HAWKS FALL TO MILWAUKEE BUCKS ON THE ROAD

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks fell to the Milwaukee Bucks 108-101 last night in Milwaukee.  The Hawks will return home to the Philips Arena in Atlanta to host the Chicago Bulls tonight at 7:30 pm.

REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR BRAVES MIRACLE FIELD OF ROME

In other Braves news, the Rome Braves have announced that they, along with the Atlanta Braves Foundation and the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority, are currently accepting registration for athletes at the new Braves Miracle Field of Rome.  Registration forms are available online at www.romebraves.com and www.rfpra.com.  The cost is $50 per athlete, but scholarship opportunities are available, according to a Rome Braves media release.  Miracle Field athletes will be recognized on field at State Mutual Stadium before the Rome Braves game on Friday, April 13th.

BERRY COLLEGE SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH COVENANT

Berry College’s softball team split a double header with Covenant yesterday at Berry’s South Ford Field.  Berry won the opener 6-5, while Covenant took won the nightcap 10-7.  The Lady Vikings will host Piedmont in a double header this Saturday at noon.

THREE FLOYD COUNTY STUDENTS SELECTED FOR GOVERNOR’S HONORS PROGRAM

Three Floyd County high school students have been selected to participate in the 2012 Governor’s Honors Program.  Bennett Garland and Molly Young, juniors at Armuchee High School and Kaitlyn Childers, a sophomore at Pepperell High, have been selected as finalists and will participate in the four-week program this summer.  According to a Floyd County Schools media release, Garland was selected in the area of social studies, Young was selected in biology, and Childers was selected in mathematics.

FREEMAN HITS A PAIR OF HOMERS IN ATLANTA BRAVES’ SPRING TRAINING WIN OVER NEW YORK METS

In your Atlanta Braves Spring Training update, the Braves beat the New York Mets 7-5 yesterday in Port St. Lucie, Florida.  Freddie Freeman helped secure the win with two homers for the Braves, one in the seventh and another in the ninth.

SHORTER BASEBALL TAKES 10-INNING VICTORY OVER BRYAN COLLEGE

In your local college baseball update, Shorter University picked up a 9-8 victory in 10 innings over Bryan College in a non-league match-up yesterday at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.  The Hawks will return to action this weekend in Mt. Vernon, Georgia with a three-game series against Brewton Parker.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS TO TAKE THE STAGE IN CEDARTOWN THIS SATURDAY

The 3rd annual 95.7 FM The Ridge/Rome News-Tribune Battle of the Bands will take the stage at the Cedartown Performing Arts Center this Saturday night, March 31st, at 7:30 pm.  The list of competitors has been narrowed to the Top 5, thanks to an online voting process that was offered on the Rome News-Tribune’s website.  Matt D of Matt D and Mullins in the Morning on 95.7 FM The Ridge says those in attendance at Saturday’s event will be treated to some great musical entertainment.
