ROME CITY COMMISSION TO MEET THIS EVENING

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They’ll meet in a caucus session at 5 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall in downtown Rome.  Take a look at their agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

Braves fans, your wait for the 2012 regular season to begin is almost over!  The Atlanta Braves and the Rome Braves will both open the season on the road this Thursday, April 5th.  The Atlanta Braves will be in New York to take on the Mets that day, while the Rome Braves will be in Charleston, South Carolina to take on the Riverdogs.  Once again this year, WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge will serve as Northwest Georgia’s Braves connection.  You can follow the Atlanta Braves once the regular season begins on WLAQ, and listen to Rome Braves baseball on 95.7 FM The Ridge.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL WEEKEND UPDATE

In college softball, Shorter University’s Lady Hawks were in Columbus, Georgia to participate in a Southern States Athletic Conference Crossover event over the weekend.  They beat Mobile 5-1 before having their time cut short  at the event as all three of their final games were canceled, including matches Faulkner on Friday and Belhaven and Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday.  The Lady Hawks will host Brewton Parker in a double header tomorrow at 5 pm at the Alto Park softball complex.

KENTUCKY TO FACE KANSAS IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Of course, the big story in sports today is the NCAA Championship Game.  Kentucky will face Kansas in this year’s men’s championship game at 9 pm tonight.  The game will be televised on CBS.

FLOYD COUNTY COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY HOSTS SPRING PLANT SALE

The Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy is hosting a Spring Plant Sale today thru Friday at 100 Tom Poe Drive, off Cedar Avenue across from Georgia Northwestern Technical College.  The sale will be open to the public from 8:30 am until 11 am and 12:15 pm until 2:30 pm daily until sold out. Special hours will be offered today and Wednesday from 3:30 pm until 5 pm.  Proceeds will benefit Future Farmers of America at the school.

ATLANTA HAWKS OFF FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER WEEKEND WIN, LOSS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks have a few days off after a pair of weekend games that resulted in a 100-90 win at home over the New York Knicks on Friday night and a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers 95-90 on the road on Saturday night.  The Hawks will return to action on Wednesday night at the Philips Arena against the Charlotte Bobcats.  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.

COLLEGE BASEBALL WEEKEND UPDATE

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks were in Mt. Vernon, Georgia over the weekend for a three game set with Brewton-Parker.  Brewton-Parker won Friday night’s game 13-0, while Shorter swept Saturday’s double header 5-4 and 10-3.  The Hawks will travel to Waleska to take on Reinhardt in a double header tomorrow at 4 pm.

JOURNALIST COKIE ROBERTS VISITS BERRY COLLEGE

Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts paid a visit to Berry College yesterday.  She delivered a speech, “An Insider’s View of Washington DC”, as part of the college’s Gloria Shatto Lecture Series.  Prior to her lecture, she toured the Berry campus and answered questions from local media during a press conference.  When asked about some of the things an insider might know about DC that the average American wouldn’t, she said that things have changed over the years.  She says that politicians are far less friendly with each other than they used to be.
