DEBATE NIGHT IN AMERICA AS OBAMA AND ROMNEY DUKE IT OUT FOR SECOND TIME THIS ELECTION SEASON

It was Debate Night in America last night as President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney went head-to-head in what turned out to be a heated debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.  The debate took on a town hall format, with questions from the audience on topics ranging from the economy to health care to the recent terror attacks in Libya.  There was even a question related to how Romney compares to Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush.

FIRST EVER TEEN MAZE TO HELP STUDENTS MAKE WISE CHOICES

The Floyd County Commission on Children and Youth has teamed up with Northwest Georgia Public Health to present Floyd County’s first-ever Teen Maze, a life-size interactive game intended to serve as a constructive learning experience for ninth-grade students from Rome High and all four Floyd County high schools including Armuchee, Coosa, Model and Pepperell.

MCCANN UNDERGOES SHOULDER SURGERY

Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann underwent surgery to repair his right shoulder yesterday afternoon.  The shoulder frequently gave McCann trouble during the 2012 season, particularly when he was at bat.  He is expected to begin rehabbing the repaired shoulder in four months.  The hope is that he will be able to return to full baseball activity in about six months (hopefully sometime within the first few weeks of the 2013 season).

DEBATE NIGHT ALSO IN FLOYD COUNTY ON TUESDAY NIGHT

It was also Debate Night in Floyd County last night.  Two debates were held locally.  The first was hosted by the Rome/Floyd County NAACP, 100 Black Men of Rome and Northwest Georgia and the MLK Commission at the Rome Civic Center.  The other was hosted by the Floyd County Republican Women at the Charles C. Parker Senior Center in Rome.  Candidates that participated in the latter debate included:  incumbent Barbara Penson and Mark McAllister, candidates for Floyd County Clerk of Superior Court; Garry Fricks and Irwin Bagwell, who are running to keep their seats on the Floyd County Commission; incumbent Barbara Massey Reece and her challenger for State House District 12 Eddie Lumsden; and Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter and his challenger, Cary Cooper.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ON THE FIELD, ON THE RADIO THIS FRIDAY NIGHT

Friday night lights will shine in just a couple of nights from tonight as area high school football teams take the field.  And high school football will take to the airwaves of 95.7 FM The Ridge and WLAQ AM 1410 on Friday night.

MLB POST SEASON UPDATE

In MLB playoff news, the Detroit Tigers posted a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees to take a 3-0 lead in the American League Championship Series last night in Detroit.  The Tigers could clinch the best-of-seven series and a trip to the World Series with a win in game four tonight at 8 pm in the Motor City.  The game will be televised on TBS.

YARD SALE AT WLAQ/THE RIDGE THIS SATURDAY TO BENEFIT 2012 WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

Attention yard sale enthusiasts and lovers of fun for a good cause!  The Alzheimer’s Association will host a yard sale in support of the 2012 Walk To End Alzheimer’s this Saturday outside the studios of WLAQ AM 1410 and 95.7 FM The Ridge at 2 Mount Alto Road in Rome.  The sale will begin at 7 am.  Matt Davis with WLAQ and 95.7 FM The Ridge and co-chair of the Walk To End Alzheimer’s says that it will be a fun morning with special surprises for all involved.
