ATLANTA BRAVES TO WELCOME BALTIMORE ORIOLES TO TURNER FIELD OVER THE WEEKEND

The Atlanta Braves were off last night and will return to action tonight at Turner Field against the Baltimore Orioles in a three game interleague series that will continue thru Sunday.  First pitch of tonight’s game is set for 7:35 pm.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 6:20 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

BURGETT H. MOONEY JR ROME CLASSIC COMES TO A CLOSE AT COOSA COUNTRY CLUB

The Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic golf tournament concluded yesterday at the Coosa Country Club in Rome.  Justin Connelly of McDonough won the championship in the boys’ division, while Madison Lellyo of Windermere, Florida won the girls’ championship.  The tournament was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.

UNEMPLOYMENT UNCHANGED FROM APRIL TO MAY IN GEORGIA

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler has announced that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.9 percent from April to May, the first time in 10 months that the jobless rate has failed to decline.  Georgia’s jobless rate stood at 9.8 percent in May 2011.
Butler says that unemployment is down to its lowest level since the beginning of the recession.

GEORGIA VETERANS OF IRAQ WAR TO BE HONORED WITH PARADE THIS SATURDAY IN DOWNTOWN ROME

Downtown Rome will welcome Iraq veterans this Saturday with the Georgia Honors Iraq War Veterans parade.  The parade is set to get underway at 11 am and will feature Iraq War veterans from across the state.  Georgia Governor Nathan Deal is scheduled to be in attendance, along with Congressmen Phil Gingrey and Tom Graves.  It will also feature a flyover from Tiger Flight, which will signal the start of the parade.  The parade will be followed by a special event at the Forum, which will feature refreshments, live music and children’s activities.  

MIAMI HEAT TOPS OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER IN GAME TWO OF NBA FINALS

The Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-96 last night in game two of the NBA Finals in Oklahoma City.  The series is now tied at a game apiece and will move to Miami for game three this Sunday evening at 8 pm.

Shorter University came in at number two in the final NAIA standings of the 2011-2012 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup released on Wednesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.  

WINGS OVER NORTH GEORGIA AIR SHOW TO DELIGHT FLIGHT FANS AT RUSSELL AIRPORT IN SEPTEMBER

Fans of flight will want to go ahead and make plans to attend the Wings Over North Georgia air show at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport/Admiral John H. Towers Field on September 28th thru 30th.  Air show director Rob Skelton says that the air show is going to be huge and will feature various aircraft including the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

ROME BRAVES FALL TO AUGUSTA GREENJACKETS IN SERIES CLOSER
