COLLEGE BASEBALL UPDATE: SHORTER ON THE ROAD, BERRY AT HOME THIS WEEKEND

Shorter University’s baseball Hawks will be in Mt. Vernon, Georgia this weekend for a three game set with Brewton-Parker.  The teams will play a single game this evening at 6 pm and a double header tomorrow at 1 pm.

ROME WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO TOWN

Rome, Georgia played host to a couple dozen consular and trade officials from 23 countries who were in town yesterday as part of Georgia’s 27th annual International VIP Tour.  Their agenda for the day included stops at Darlington School, Suzuki Manufacturing of North America and Berry College.

ISAKSON JOINS SENATE VETERANS JOBS CAUCUS TO KICK OFF “I HIRE VETERANS” INITIATIVE

US Senator Johnny Isakson yesterday joined fellow members of the Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus in hosting an event to kick off their “I Hire Veterans” initiative.  According to a release from Isakson’s office, the initiative encourages members of the Senate and American businesses to show their commitment to hiring veterans by displaying a simple logo – “I Hire Veteran” – in their offices.

ATLANTA BRAVES AND NEW YORK YANKEES PLAY TO 5-5 TIE

In your Atlanta Braves Spring Training update, the Braves played to a 5-5 tie with the New York Yankees in 10 innings yesterday at Champion Stadium at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.  Freddie Freeman’s bat stayed hot for the Braves as he hit his fifth home run in eight at-bats in the seventh inning of yesterday’s game.  Jason Heyward also went deep yesterday with a two-run shot in the ninth to tie the game up.  It was a pretty good day for Heyward, who also helped his team out with an excellent catch in the third inning in which he climbed the right-field wall to stop the Yankees’ Raul Ibanez from getting a home run.

YOUNG LOCAL FILMMAKER TO PROMOTE SOUTH ROME DOCUMENTARY AT SPECIAL EVENT TONIGHT

A young local filmmaker is working on a documentary about South Rome and will promote her project tonight during a special event at the Rome Area History Museum.  Xaivier Ringer is a 2004 graduate of Darlington School and a 2008 graduate of Georgetown University.  She hopes relay the rich history of the South Rome community through her documentary.  Ringer says that she’s had commitments from some notable people in the community to contribute to the project.  Those notables include Darlington School headmaster Tom Whitworth, Rome City Commissioners Jamie Doss and Bill Collins and former Commissioner Duane Reid, Heart of the Community recipient (and the proclaimed “Mayor” of South Rome) Shirley Denmon and more.

ATLANTA HAWKS LOSE HOME MATCH TO CHICAGO BULLS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Chicago Bulls 98-77 last night on the Hawks’ home court at the Philips Arena.  The Hawks will welcome the New York Knicks to Atlanta for a 7:30 pm tip-off tomorrow night.

ROME BRAVES HOME GAMES TO BE TELEVISED ONLINE

Also on the Braves beat, the Rome Braves have announced that all 70 home games will be televised live on MiLB.TV starting this year.  The subscription service allows fans to Rome Braves action in addition to minor league games throughout the country.  Season and monthly plans are available to subscribers online at www.MiLB.TV.  More than 2,500 games will be offered, and all will be archived for on demand streaming soon after completion.  Games can be accessed at www.romebraves.com.
