ONE YEAR SINCE APRIL 27, 2011 STORMS AND TORNADOES

And today marks the one year anniversary of the storms and tornadoes that hit the Southeast on April 27, 2011, leaving substantial damage in its wake.  Many Rome and Floyd County residents were even left without homes as a result of the storms.

ATLANTA BRAVES BACK AT ‘THE TED’ TO FACE PITTSBURGH PIRATES TONIGHT

The Atlanta Braves were off yesterday and return to action tonight at Turner Field with a seven game home stand that will include four games with the Pittsburgh Pirates and three with the Philadelphia Phillies.  First pitch for tonight’s game one against the Pirates is set for 7:35 pm.  The game will be broadcast on the AM 1410 WLAQ, Rome’s original home for Atlanta Braves baseball.  Air time for the pre-game show is 6:20 pm from the Atlanta Braves radio network.

SHORTER TO HOST 2012 MID-SOUTH TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NEWLY RENOVATED MADDOX TRACK AND BARRON STADIUM

Shorter University will play host to the 2012 Mid-South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships today and tomorrow at the newly renovated Maddox Track and Historic Barron Stadium.  This is the first time that Shorter has ever hosted the championships.  Shorter’s head track and field coach Scott Byrd says it will also be the last, due to the University’s becoming an NCAA Division II institution.

UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN IN MARCH FOR METRO ROME, NORTHWEST GEORGIA

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the preliminary unemployment rate for metro Rome decreased to 10.3 percent in March, down from a revised 10.8 percent in February.  Metro Rome’s jobless rate was also 10.3 percent in March 2011.

ROME BRAVES REBOUND FROM HUGE LOSS WITH WIN OVER HAGERSTOWN SUNS AT SMS

The Rome Braves picked up a 6-2 win over the Hagerstown Suns last night at State Mutual Stadium, thanks in part to the return of Jakob Dalfonso to the line up.  It was certainly a welcome win after the Braves’ huge 24-2 loss to the Suns on Wednesday night.

ATLANTA HAWKS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN OVER DALLAS MAVERICKS AT PHILIPS, NOW READY FOR NBA PLAYOFFS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks closed out the 2011-2012 regular season with a 106-89 victory over the Dallas Mavericks last night at the Philips Arena.  Tip off is set for 8 pm.  Now, the Hawks are NBA playoff-bound.  They’ll face the Boston Celtics in first round action.  Game one is set for Sunday night in Atlanta.  Tip off is set for 7 pm.

CLOCKTOWER CLASSIC IS UNDERWAY

The Clocktower Classic handcycling race got underway yesterday with a Prologue Time Trial in Cedartown.  It continues today with a 36 mile road race at the Rocky Mountain Recreation area.  Activities tomorrow will include a Hill Climb up Lavender Mountain and the Downtown Criterium.  The Clocktower Classic will conclude with a Time Trial on Technology Parkway on Sunday, April 29th.

HUFSTETLER TO RUN FOR STATE SENATE

Former Floyd County Commissioner Chuck Hufstetler has announced his intention to seek the GOP nomination for the newly created Georgia Senate District 52.  According to a release from Hufstetler, he joined the race to give the district true conservative representation with proven leadership.
