ROME MAN DIES IN DROWNING INCIDENT

A Rome man died in a drowning incident at Little River Canyon in Alabama over the weekend.  Ramirez Austin, age 24, was swimming with friends when he went under water and did not resurface.  Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time.

SHORTER HAWKS TIME AT NAIA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT COMES TO AN END

The Shorter University Hawks’ time at the 2012 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, and their amazing 2011-2012 season, has come to an end as the top-ranked and top-seeded Hawks lost to fourth-seeded Concordia from California 81-67 last night in the semifinal round of the tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.  Concordia will go on to face Oklahoma Baptist in the championship game tonight.  The Hawks head back home to Rome, no doubt reflective over their remarkable season that, according to a Shorter sports release, left them with a school record 34 wins and three losses and the Hawks’ first time ever as the No. 1 team in the NAIA, a spot held for five of 12 weeks.  Shorter also nabbed its first conference title since 1977, won its first-ever Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, and made its first trip to the national tournament, in which they won three games to make it to the national semifinals.  Other milestones for 2011-2012 included the 100th career win for Hawks head coach Chad Warner, as well as SSAC and NABC National Coach of the Year honors.  In addition, SSAC Player of the Year Walter Hill surpassed 1,000 points for his career early this season.

ATLANTA BRAVES TOPPED BY ST. LOUIS CARDINALS IN SPRING TRAINING

In Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves lost to the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 yesterday at the Braves’ Spring Training home of ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.  The Braves will head to Lakeland to take on the Detroit Tigers today at 1:05 pm.

SHORTER SOFTBALL ON TAP FOR TODAY; LADY HAWK KRISTEN LITTLE NAMED SSAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Shorter University’s Lady Hawks softball team will host Southern States Athletic Conference rival Brenau in a double header at the Alto Park Softball Complex today at 5 pm.

ARMUCHEE TO HOST FIRST OF FOUR LISTENING SESSIONS TONIGHT

Armuchee High School will play host to the first of four systemwide listening sessions held by the Floyd County Board of Education and the Local School Governance Teams tonight at 6:30 pm.  The sessions are intended to give school leaders a better perspective of the wishes of parents and the community regarding the future of Floyd County Schools.  A second listening session will be held for the Model area this Thursday, March 22nd at 6:30 pm at Model High School.  Additional sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 27th at Pepperell High School and on Tuesday, April 10th at Coosa High School, at 6:30 pm both nights.

ATLANTA HAWKS FALL TO BOSTON CELTICS AT PHILIPS ARENA

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks were narrowly defeated by the Boston Celtics 79-76 last night at the Philips Arena.  That leaves the Hawks with an even six wins and six losses since the NBA All Star Break.  They’ll welcome the Cleveland Cavaliers to Atlanta tomorrow night.  Tip off is set for 7:30 pm.

SHORTER HAWKS HEADED TO SEMIFINAL ROUND OF NAIA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Shorter University’s Hawks basketball team has made it to the semifinal round of the 2012 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.  The top-ranked and top-seeded Hawks will face fourth-seeded Concordia from California tonight at 7 pm in Kansas City, Missouri.  The Hawks head to the semifinals after posting a 63-60 win over Rogers State in the Elite Eight on Saturday and before that, a 92-77 win over Point Loma Nazarene in second round action on Friday.  If the Hawks win tonight’s semifinal game against Concordia, they’ll advance to tomorrow night’s national championship game against the winner of today’s second semifinal game between No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 11 Mountain State.  Jim Bojo is in Kansas City to bring you the story of Shorter’s Hawks in the national tournament live on the radio on 95.7 FM The Ridge and online at www.theridge957.com.
