GREATER ROME CHAMBER PLEDGES SUPPORT OF T-SPLOST

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors has announced its unanimous support for the State of Georgia Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST), which is up for a vote on July 31st.

ATLANTA BRAVES TAKE EXCITING EXTRA INNING VICTORY FROM PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Finally!  A win for the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies!  And an exciting one at that, as the Braves beat the Phillies by a score of 15-13 in 11 innings at Turner Field.  The Braves overcame a six run deficit in the fifth and a four run deficit in the eighth to aid them in their victory.

THOMAS, LADY HAWKS EARN SSAC HONORS

And congratulations to Shorter University head softball coach Al Thomas, who has been named the 2012 Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.  Congratulations also goes out to sophomore shortstop Jackie Castaneda, who has been named the 2012 SSAC Softball Player of the Year.  The pair took the honors last week at the league’s annual awards banquet in Columbus.

COOSA RIVER BASIN INITIATIVE TO HOST WATERFEST XII THIS WEEKEND

The Coosa River Basin Initiative will host Waterfest XII this Friday and Saturday, May 4th and 5th at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome.  The event will feature a 13-mile canoe and kayak race on the Oostanaula River, kayak and canoe tug-o-wars, Boy Scout canoe tug-o-wars, an environmental fair and reptile and raptor shows.  A new kayak from Blue Sky Outfitter in Rome will also be given away.  Get more information about the event by calling CRBI executive director Joe Cook at (706) 232-2724 or by emailing him at jcook@coosa.org.  You can also find out more at www.coosa.org.

The Rome Braves were defeated by the Hagerstown Suns 10-5 last night in the series opener between the teams in Hagerstown, Maryland.

NETO NAMED NEW MEN’S HEAD SOCCER COACH AT SHORTER

Shorter University athletics director Bill Peterson has announced that Paulo Neto has been named the university’s new head men’s soccer coach.  According to a Shorter sports release, Neto is a native of Brazil and former collegiate standout at Union College.  He comes to Shorter after a successful six-year head coaching tenure at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.  He replaces former head men’s coach Josh Severns, who stepped down earlier in the spring.

SHIPMAN NAMED NATIONAL YOUNG REPUBLICAN WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Rome resident Layla Shipman has been named the National Young Republican Woman of the Year.  She received the honor this past weekend at a special event in Washington DC.  Shipman says that the National Young Republican organization is comprised of those ages 18-40 and represents the youth vote in this country.  She says that Georgia brought home four awards from their event in DC.  Not only was she named Woman of the Year, but Senator Josh McKoon from Columbus was named Man of the Year.  In addition, the Atlanta Young Republican organization was named Large Club of the Year and was honored for holding the Charitable Event of the Year.

BERRY COLLEGE THEATRE COMPANY HONORED BY KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATRE FESTIVAL

The Berry College Theatre Company students and faculty have been honored by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival adjucator for their contributions to the recent production of “The Last Night of Ballyhoo”.
