ATLANTA BRAVES TAKES SERIES CLOSER FROM TAMPA BAY RAYS

The Atlanta Braves beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 yesterday in the finale of a three game series in Tampa Bay.  Tim Hudson got the win for the Braves, after keeping the Rays scoreless in seven and two-third innings of work.  Craig Kimbrel got the save.

HIGHLAND RIVERS CENTER WORKING TO ASSIST THOSE NO LONGER SERVED BY NWGA REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Highland Rivers Center in Rome has been working to assist those no longer served by Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital, which closed back at the end of September.  Highland Rivers serves individuals suffering from mental illness, developmental disabilities and addiction.  The organization’s CEO, Jason Bearden, says that Highland Rivers has not necessarily seen an uptick in clientele following the closure of Northwest Regional but the acuity of their problems appears greater.

ROME BRAVES SHUT OUT BY CHARLESTON RIVERDOGS IN SERIES OPENER

The Rome Braves were hoping to keep momentum going after back-to-back wins over the Augusta Greenjackets on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but unfortunately were stopped last night by the Charleston Riverdogs, who shut out the Braves 3-0 in the series opener between the teams in Charleston, South Carolina.

SHORTER SOFTBALL VICTORIOUS IN POOL PLAY OPENER OF NAIA TOURNEY

Shorter University’s 10th ranked Lady Hawks softball team topped St. Gregory’s from Oklahoma 5-2 in the first game of pool play for Pool G of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The Lady Hawks hope to remain unbeaten in pool play as they take on Madonna from Michigan this evening at 6 pm.  They will face defending national champion Oregon Tech in their finale of pool play tomorrow.

NEW ARMUCHEE CONNECTOR OPENS TO TRAFFIC

The new Armuchee Connector opened to motorists yesterday morning.  A ribbon cutting was held before it officially opened to traffic.  The Armuchee Connector is a 2006 SPLOST project.  The 2.1 mile road runs from State Mutual Stadium to US 27 near Old Summerville Road.

BERRY COLLEGE ALUMNI WEEKEND/WORK WEEK BEGINS TODAY

Berry College will hold its Alumni Weekend and Work Week today thru next Friday, May 25th.  According to a Berry media release, more than 800 people are expected to turn out for the festivities.

ATLANTA BRAVES SHUT OUT MIAMI MARLINS AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves shut out the Miami Marlins 7-0 last night in the finale of a two game series between the teams (and of a four game home stand) at Turner Field.  It was the first career shut out for Braves starting pitcher Brandon Beachy, who pitched last night’s entire game.

BLACK BEAR SPOTTED IN ROME

A black bear was spotted in Rome today around Turner McCall Boulevard at Riverside Parkway near the Rome-Floyd Library and Ridge Ferry Park.  The bear, which is said to weigh around 350 pounds, has now apparently fled into to the woods.  It was first spotted around the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Rome.  Law enforcement officers, animal control officials and the Georgia DNR were on the scene investigating the incident.  The walking trail at Ridge Ferry Park was closed for a time as a precautionary measure.  More information is to come…
