ATLANTA FALCONS FALL TO CINCINNATI BENGALS IN NFL PRE-SEASON ACTION AT THE GEORGIA DOME

The Atlanta Falcons fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 24-19 last night in NFL pre-season action at the Georgia Dome.  The Falcons are now 0-2 and in search of their first pre-season win of the year.  They’ll hit the road for their next pre-season game, which is set for next Friday night, August 24th in Miami against the Dolphins.

High school football is right around the corner!  Calhoun beat Rome 31-0 in a scrimmage game at Rome last night.  There are a number of scrimmage games on tap for tonight.

SHORTER’S COACH JONES ‘FEELING GOOD’ ABOUT UPCOMING FOOTBALL SEASON

The 2012 season will kick off in less than two weeks for Shorter University’s football team.  The Hawks are hard at work in preparation for the season.  Head Coach Phil Jones told the voice of the Hawks, 95.7 FM The Ridge’s Jim Bojo, that he feels good about the upcoming season.

UNEMPLOYMENT RISES IN GEORGIA FOR JULY

The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 9.3 percent in July, up from 9.0 percent in June.  Georgia’s jobless rate was 10 percent in July 2011.

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY SUPPLIER TO BUILD PLANT, BRING 220 JOBS TO BARTOW COUNTY

Governor Nathan Deal has announced that Austrian automotive industry supplier voestalpine Metal Forming, under its automotive body parts unit, plans to build a manufacturing facility near Cartersville in Bartow County.  The move will create 220 jobs, according to a release from the Governor’s office.  The company will invest $62 million in the new facility, its first in the Southeast.

ATLANTA BRAVES PICK UP SECOND WIN IN A ROW OVER SAN DIEGO PADRES AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres for the second night in a row, 6-1 last night in game three of a four game series at Turner Field.  Paul Maholm got the win; he pitched seven innings, giving up five hits and just one run (a solo home run from Logan Forsythe in the top of the third).
