COLLEGE BASEBALL UPDATE: SHORTER SPLITS, BERRY TAKES TWO OF THREE OVER THE WEEKEND

Local college baseball teams took the field this past weekend.  
Shorter University’s Hawks played their first home games of the season  on Saturday against the University of Pikeville.  The teams the double-header, with Pikeville winning game one 2-0 and Shorter taking the night cap 12-2 at the Robert H. Ledbetter Field on the Shorter University campus.
The Hawks will host Bryan tomorrow at 1 pm in a single game that will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and online at www.theridge957.com.  

TELLUS M– USEUM DIRECTOR TO DISCUSS PALEONTOLOGY OF GEORGIA TONIGHT

The Tellus:  Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville will continue its monthly lecture series tonight as museum director Jose Santamaria discusses “The Paleontology of Georgia” at 7 pm.  Marketing director Joe Schulman invites the public to attend.  He says that the museum galleries will be open extended hours until 9 pm.

ADULT SPELLING BEE BENEFITS HARBOR HO– USE

The Shane Richardson Memorial Adult Spelling Bee was held last night out at Berry College.  The Hive Talkin’ team won it for properly spelling “lagniappe”.  The event raised money for the Harbor House, a local non-profit organization aimed at serving children who are victims of sexual or physical abuse.

ATLANTA HAWKS LOSE TO MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES AT PHILIPS

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks returned to their home court of the Philips Arena last night only to lose to the Memphis Grizzlies 96-77.  It was just the Hawks’ second home loss of the season, leaving them with eight wins and two losses at home and a 16 win – seven loss record overall so far for the 2011-2012 season.  The Hawks will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to the Philips Arena tomorrow night; tip off is set for 7 pm.

FLOYD DEMS ANTICIPATE LIVELY ELECTION SEASON

Election season is in full swing.  The focus, of course, has mainly been on the Republican party as their supporters go to the polls to determine who will represent the party in the fall against President Barack Obama.  Members of both the Republican and Democratic parties have a vested interest in knowing how the Republican presidential candidates stack up against Obama.  Wendy Davis, vice president for campaigns and elections for the Floyd County Democratic Party, told WLAQ AM 1410’s Good Morning Rome on Thursday that she anticipates lively debates between Obama and whoever gets the Republican presidential nomination.  She also noted that there are far fewer debates planned for the fall than are going on now for Republican candidates.

MAN KILLED BY TRAIN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED

The 29-year-old man that was hit and killed by a train on Wednesday night has been identified.  Donald Hicks, Jr. of Legion Drive in Lindale was struck by a Norfolk-Southern train at the tracks along Maple Road where it turns into Park Avenue.  He and another person tried to cross the tracks about 9:30 pm Wednesday night.  The other person made it across.  Hicks was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center shortly after the incident.

NUMBER ONE SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS’ WINNING STREAK ENDED BY POINT UNIVERSITY

The Shorter University mens’ basketball team’s season-long winning streak has come to an end as the previously undefeated and number one Hawks were narrowly defeated by Point University 73-72 in a non-conference match last night in East Point.  Shorter is still unbeaten in conference play.  The Hawks and the Lady Hawks will face Southern States Athletic Conference rival Southern Wesleyan tomorrow in Central, South Carolina.  The women will play at 2 pm, followed by the men at 4 pm.  The games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.
