BUSY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ANTICIPATED ON GEORGIA’S ROADS

And, of course, state troopers are anticipating a busy weekend on Georgia’s roads over Memorial Day weekend.  The 78 hour holiday period begins this evening at 6 pm and ends at midnight on Memorial Day, according to Colonel Mark McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.  During last year’s Memorial Day holiday travel period, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 312 traffic crashes that resulted in 236 injuries and 13 fatalities.

ROME BRAVES SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER WITH ASHEVILLE TOURISTS AT SMS

The Rome Braves split a double header with the Asheville Tourists last night to open a five game series at State Mutual Stadium.  The Tourists won game one 6-4, while the Braves rallied for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

SHORTER SOFTBALL’S BROOME, CASTANEDA NAMED ALL-AMERICANS BY NAIA, BROOME FEATURED ON ESPN

In news from the 2012 NAIA Champion Shorter Lady Hawks softball team, senior Charlsie Broome and sophomore Jackie Castaneda have been named first team All-Americans by the NAIA, according to a release issued yesterday by the NAIA.  Also, Broome was featured on ESPN on Wednesday night!  Her clutch ninth-inning snag of a potential go-ahead home run from Oklahoma City’s LeeAnn Lopez was featured as the number two play on ESPN SportsCenter’s famous Top 10 Plays countdown.

MEMORIAL DAY CLOSINGS

Memorial Day is coming up this Monday.  There will be a number of closings that day, including Rome, Floyd County, state and federal offices.  No mail will be delivered on Monday.  The City of Rome’s Solid Waste Collections Department will be closed that day.  Monday’s garbage and recycling will be collected on Tuesday.  Tuesday’s route will go on as normal.  All banks will be closed on Monday, along with the Rome Floyd County Library and the Department of Drivers Services (which is normally closed on Monday and will also be closed on Saturday).  The Rome Transit Department buses will not run on Monday.

SHORTER HEAD SOFTBALL COACH AL THOMAS TO TALK NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP ON SPORTS TALK SATURDAY

Tune in for tomorrow’s edition of Sports Talk Saturday with Matt D and Scott on WLAQ AM 1410.  The special guest will be Shorter University head softball coach Al Thomas.  Thomas’s 10th ranked Lady Hawks softball team captured the school’s first ever NAIA softball national championship with a 1-0 win over 3rd ranked Oklahoma City in the title game of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Wednesday.

ATLANTA BRAVES SWEPT BY CINCINNATI REDS IN CINCY

The Atlanta Braves lost for the fourth night in a row to the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 last night in Cincinnati, allowing the Reds to sweep the Braves in the four game series between the teams.  That marks the first time that the Braves have lost four in a row since the beginning of the season.

SHORTER UNIVERSITY LADY HAWKS SOFTBALL TEAM ARE 2012 NAIA CHAMPS!!!!

Congratulations to Shorter University head softball coach Al Thomas and his Lady Hawks, who are the winners of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship!!  The Lady Hawks captured the title with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma City in the championship game yesterday in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
