PROGRESS CONTINUES ON FLOYD COUNTY’S EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM, OPERATIONS CENTER

Floyd County’s new Emergency Communications System and Emergency Operations Center are both expected to be fully functional before too long.  Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Scotty Hancock says that progress is coming along with the 2009 SPLOST-funded Emergency Communications System.  He says that the towers are up and the buildings are in place.  He expects the system to be tested in December and that it will be ready to roll sometime next year.  

NO FIREWORKS FOR ATLANTA BRAVES IN FOURTH OF JULY EVENING LOSS TO CHICAGO CUBS AT TURNER FIELD

The Atlanta Braves fell to the Chicago Cubs 5-1 in a Fourth of July evening game at Turner Field last night.  The Braves offense was unable to back up starting pitcher Randall Delgado, who was tagged with the loss in last night’s game.

In addition to the music and fireworks at Ridge Ferry Park tonight, there are a number of Fourth of July festivities to which you may avail yourself today.  Cave Spring’s Fourth of July Parade is set for 9 am.  You can watch the parade in the town square or participate by meeting at Perry Farm at 8:30 am.

ROME BRAVES CLOSE OUT SERIES WITH KANNAPOLIS INTIMIDATORS IN VICTORIOUS FASHION AT SMS

The Rome Braves defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 7-4 last night in front of just over 5,000 fans at State Mutual Stadium.  Highlights of the game included a two-run homer from William Beckwith in the first inning that gave the Braves an early lead.  Ryan Weber ended up with the win for the Braves, while Ian Thomas got the save.  Matthew Lane took the loss for the Intimidators.  

ROME BRAVES CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY ON THE ROAD WITH VICTORY OVER GREENVILLE DRIVE

The Rome Braves beat the Greenville Drive 13-6 in the opener of a five game series in Greenville, South Carolina last night.  The Braves brought the Fourth of July fireworks to the field!  

FIREWORKS, MUSIC TO HIGHLIGHT FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION AT RIDGE FERRY PARK

Rome and Floyd County will join with communities across the USA today to celebrate Independence Day.  A big night is in store tonight for those in attendance at the Fourth of July celebration at Ridge Ferry Park – the Salute to America.  Gates open at 6 pm for the event, which will feature patriotic music from the Eighth Regiment Band and the Rome Symphony Orchestra, as well as fireworks.  The celebration is being sponsored by the Harbin Clinic and the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority.  

FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY

The Fourth of July holiday travel period is officially underway.  It began yesterday evening at 6 pm and continues thru midnight tonight.  So far, no fatalities have been reported on the state’s roads, according to the Georgia State Patrol.  The GSP recorded 13 fatalities during last year’s 78-hour  Independence Day travel period, along with 320 accidents and 286 injuries.

CHIPPER JONES IS ALL-STAR BOUND!!!!

Chipper Jones’ five hit night in the Atlanta Braves 10-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs last night was preceded by the news that Jones will join the National League roster in the 2012 MLB All Star Game in Kansas City on July 10th.  He will fill the spot vacated by injured LA Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.  This will be Jones’ eighth and final All Star appearance, as he will retire at the end of this season.  
Braves fans can now focus all their attention on getting Michael Bourn to the All Star Game in the NL Final Vote.
