The 2013 session of the Georgia General Assembly gets underway today.  Lawmakers will gather under the Gold Dome in Atlanta to begin the 40-day session this morning.

ROME CITY COMMISSION TO MEET THIS EVENING

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session for the first time in 2013 this evening.  They’ll gather for a caucus session at 5 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall (the City Auditorium) on Broad Street in downtown Rome.  Take a look at their agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.

ATLANTA FALCONS ARE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND!!

The Atlanta Falcons are headed for the NFC Championship Game after posting a nail biting 30-28 divisional round win over the Seattle Seahawks yesterday at the Georgia Dome.

POLAR BEAR PADDLE SET FOR SATURDAY

Rome’s annual Polar Bear Paddle is set for this Saturday, January 12th.  The six mile paddle is set to depart Dixon Landing at Grizzard Park at 10 am and will end at Heritage Park in downtown Rome.

BUSY JANUARY FOR COOSA RIVER BASIN INITIATIVE

The Coosa River Basin Initiative has a few concerns that it will take before the Georgia General Assembly during the 2013 session.  Executive Director Joe Cook says one of his main priorities will be the Hazardous Waste Trustfund, which is up for renewal this year.

RAINY WEEK AHEAD

Balmy conditions over the weekend are giving way to rain as the work week begins.  The National Weather Service has posted a Flood Watch that will take effect this afternoon at 1 pm and remain in place thru Wednesday morning.  A 100 percent chance of rain is in the forecast for today and tonight, with daytime highs in the mid 50s and overnight lows in the mid 40s.  Rain remains in the forecast throughout the week.

LOCAL COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUND UP

In your local college basketball update from over the weekend, Shorter University’s Hawks and Lady Hawks posted wins over Gulf South Conference rival Christian Brothers on Saturday at Shorter’s Winthrop King Centre.  The Lady Hawks won the opener 56-43, while the Hawks took a 56-49 victory in the nightcap.  Shorter’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will return to action on Thursday night at North Alabama.  Tip off is set for 7 pm for the women and 9 pm for the men.  Those games will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.
