SECOND ANNUAL ROME CELEBRITY DANCE CHALLENGE SET FOR AUGUST 18TH TO BENEFIT SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTER

Familiar faces will take the stage in the second annual Rome Celebrity Dance Challenge on Saturday, August 18th at 7 pm at the Rome City Auditorium.  All proceeds will benefit the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia.

AKINS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS

Model High School’s head boys basketball coach Andy Akin has announced his retirement.  Akin has served as the boys’ coach for the past four seasons and was with the girls head coach before that.  He is one of three Model coaches to step down in recent days.  Lynn Hunnicutt is also leaving his job as head football coach, and Ryan Strickland is leaving his post as head coach for the baseball and softball teams to take a job in Colquitt County.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO CINCINNATI REDS IN SERIES OPENER IN CINCY

The Atlanta Braves lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 last night in the opener of a four game series in Cincinnati.  Tough loss for Braves starting pitcher Mike Minor, who gave up four solo home runs in last night’s game.

GHC NAMES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

Georgia Highlands College’s Athletics Director Phil Gaffney has announced the appointment of Brandan Harrell as the college’s women’s basketball coach.  According to a GHC press release, Harrell comes to Georgia Highlands from South Georgia Technical College in Cordele, where he served as head coach since the inception of that school’s women’s basketball program in 2004.

ROME BRAVES RAINED OUT, DOUBLE HEADER WITH AUGUSTA GREENJACKETS SET FOR TODAY AT STATE MUTUAL STADIUM

The Rome Braves’ home stand opener against the Augusta Greenjackets scheduled for last night at State Mutual Stadium has been postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as part of a double header today at 10:30 am.  Two seven inning games will make up the early Education Day outing.  JB Smith will bring you the play by play story of both games on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

SHORTER SOFTBALL HEADING FOR SEMIFINALS OF NAIA TOURNEY

Shorter University’s 10th ranked Lady Hawks softball team picked up back-to-back wins yesterday over of Cal State San Marcos 4-3 and Oklahoma City 3-1 yesterday to advance to the semifinal round of the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The Lady Hawks will take on conference mate and 16th ranked Brenau today at 1:30 pm.  The winner of that game will head to the national championship game on Wednesday.

ROME CITY COMMISSION TO MEET TONIGHT

The Rome City Commission will meet in regular session this evening.  They’ll convene in a caucus session at 5 pm, which will be followed by their regular meeting at 6:30 pm at City Hall on Broad Street in downtown Rome.  Detrick Redding is scheduled to be sworn in as the newest Commissioner.  He was chosen from a slate of eight candidates to take the Ward Two post vacated by Duane Reid at the end of February.  Take a look at Commissioners’ agenda online at www.romefloyd.com.
